Turbo Upgrade for Tiptronic (POLL) - Need Advice =)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys i would like to upgrade the turbo on my car this summer and was looking for advice as to what would be best. I'll be doing the install myself with some of my buddies so labor cost doesnt worry me at all.

Right now i have GIAC Stage I, i liked it for the first few weeks and now want more . I was looking at a few options out there

    1. K04 , alot of people have this. Some say they like it others say they wish they stayed with K03. Power is ~250HP?

    2. GT2X Kit. Haven't heard much about this kit, it looks like its right inbetween the k04 and the elim so it might be an option. ~300HP?

    3. GTRS Eliminator Kit. I saw another person had this but im not 100% sure wether or not the elim will work with a tip tranny and what would be required to run it safely. ~350HP?

    4. Or just go Stage I+/II

Comment/Suggestions Welcome ... Just dont tell me to get a manual tranny lol i wana make the best out of what i got

I'm curious... is the k04 250whp or crank hp? Because what's the point of going k04 when an APR 1+ chip gets you 245 crank hp?

get the large injector file from Giac and some 386cc injectors and try that first. It will liven up your car quite a bit.

    i'm also wondering about this...

i read somewhere that BMW, on the 335i, went the route of 2 smaller turbos instead of a big one to reduce lag - has anyone TT'd their 1.8, and if so, what kind of power are they pushing as a result?

sorry for the hijack - FWIW, i'm voting stg I+

GTRS; it has the most linear torque band, whereas, the k03 & k04 all have characteristic boost spikes that probably aren't too good for an automatic

Well for one, stage 1+ and stage II are two completely different things.

Like evola said, get the injectors and the large injector file first. With that comes an upgrade in the DV. That will put you to stage 1+.

If you go stage II, you'll bolt on a K04. If you do that, you'll want to replace not just the DV, but the TIP and add on a FMIC or SMIC.

I voted for the elim kit. Go big or go home.

Is Stage 1+ really worth it over Stage 1? I mean is the hp/tq diff noticeable?

GIAC is not great either. The worst is when in D and under light / medium acceleration. boost is up and down like crazy.

GIAC 1+ is too aggressive for TIP cars.

That’s why you should just stick with a KO4 with "all the trimmings" as mentioned on here; i.e. Exhaust, Injectors, maybe some heat shielding on the intake side to compliment an upgraded SMIC or do the DSMIC. Or if you don't mind the FMIC look...

Add a EBC to the Elim setup, run it at lower boost levels and bump it a little at a time or after having the kit on the car for some time.

Tq is what is going to kill the trans not the amount of hp your making, the K04 has a much quicker tq band which means it would put the most stress on your transmission vs a setup like the BT's which have a smoother tq band.

It's not too bad if you learn how to control it. The worst part is when you're on the highway in 5th (tiptronic) and accelerate past 4k rpms, itll automatically kick into 4th, and back into 5th, and back into 4th. So you have to understand it and know how to drive it well. But overall I love it and it was 100% worth it. I just wish it was the first thing i did to my car.

You can recode the TCU to stop the tip mode auto gear shifts. Disabling DSP may help the shift point errors with APR's tuning.
Try "0001102" to hold selected gear in tip mode, and "0001112" to also disable DSP.

I talked to my local audi tuner/specialist and he said the TIP tranny in my B7 is good for about 300whp/300lb. ft. of torque. I'm not sure about the other model yr. trannies.
