i see some people say to go 2001+ for replacing your k03, are there better years for a k04 or are they all the same?

I believe it was the K04-001 that came on the 225tt. The K04-15 will bolt onto the longitudinal 1.8T.

TT225 would be a k04-20, -22, or -23, not a k04-001. Doesn't change the fact that it won't bolt up to our cars though.

    k04-001:

K04-2x is on the left here:

    k04-15:
    Current: 2010 S4 Prestige, 2010 A4 Premium Plus, 1987 Grady-White Overnighter 206G
    Gone: 1999 Wrangler Sport, 2001.5 A4 1.8TQM w/GTRS, 1997 Wrangler Sport, 1990 Corrado Stage IV Corrado g60

I think he is confussing the KO3S from the 2001 model with a KO4-15.. The KO3S is decent but not as much as a KO4

    Re: Different k04's?

the k03S is obviously much more k03-like in charachter, the k04 is a superior turbo compared to the k03S, but still lacking.

    Re: Different k04's?

the k03, k03s and k04 (not tt225) all use the same compressor and turbine housings... how big of a difference does a few mm bigger compressor wheel make with the same turbine wheel? not too much lol

    Re: Different k04's?

when all i had was chip/exhaust i was side by side with a 180TT (k03s) from 45 mph to 130, the difference is the k03s has a lower spike and holds a higher psi longer and the k03 has a bigger spike and dies of quicker, i feel that running software tuned for the k03s on the smaller k03 would be a big no-no as the turbine wheel is totally different

not sure if the longitudinal turbos are the same then, this is not the case in transverse turbos...

Not exactly true. Can get another 35-40 hp and torque from aggressive K04 over K03. I realize its not GT series power, but it is still a significant difference, my last car was APR chipped/turbo-back exhaust K03 and my current GIAC FXK04 setup is far more torquey (which I realize some dislike) and doesnt die off up top quite as quick as the K03 (yeah it still falls on its face up top).

So I really think it depends on how/where the car is driven. Where I live with lots of stop and go, windy roads etc the powerband of the K04 is perfect for me. Of course I still long for a GT variant, maybe elim.

It never was; the K04-15 is a custom built turbo for the A4 engine which Borg make from time to time because of demand.
