    Need Help in Tuning

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi, This is actually my first real post. After having the Audi for about 3 months.
I have 03 A4 1.8T i had a TL-S with some visual and performance upgrades which makes my 1.8T feels really SLOW.
I have searched the entire site for about 3 months before posting this thread.
Now i have knowledge about the visual modes but have to learn more about some performance modes in audi.
I was thinking to buy a e39 540i but im losing alot by trading the car so i planned to keep it for about 2 to 3 years
Back to the topic, this is what i thought to do to make it a little faster than the TL-s
Chip it - Now i dont know which chip and which performance shop in NY
Headers- Which headers and where to find em
Intake - Which intake is better
Exhaust - Will it give me more than 5 HP?
Underdrive Pulley- Where can i get it and will it be worth it?
I have to stay in a budget and do it so please help
    Thankyou

FOR THAT MUCH U CAN GET A chip with injectors! i recommend the GIAC FXK03 file because i'm sure their tranny programing is better if ur Auto, but i have APR and except for the worst shifting in the world it's great!

Headers.....we don't have headers, turbo cars have manifolds>turbo>downpipe. A downpipe and straight pipe will free up tq from the restrictive oem ones. Turbo cars gain alot with these two options where as n/a cars dont.
Intake.....just get a K&n filter because a real intake will not really do anything for you in the performance dept.
    Exhaust...explained with the headers shpeel.
underdrive pulley might do sumthin, less rotational mass but I wouldnt waste my time.
Tuning.... there are many companies but I would go with revo because you dont have to ship your ecu out, it's uploaded through the serial port.

Sounds like you know how to work on cars which puts you infront of half the people on this site

Now pay me for my time

Thanx for the info. I worked a little on my TL-S but since this is a different setup i wanted to ask from the people who have already done it. I Have very little knowledge about the turbos. I heard if you can increase the PSIs your basically making more power. So maybe Exhaust, chip , intercooler and a fine tune can put me ahead?

    Re: Need Help in Tuning

    03 TLS = 260/232

    1+ = ~235/275

For 1k all you can really do is 1+ and TP. If you're goal is power either GTRS or trade the car in simply because you have an auto.

    Re: Need Help in Tuning

Just to get this right what you compare

    2003 Acura TL-S spec according to cars.com
    FWD
    3.2L engine
    260 HP
    232 TQ
    0-60 6.8 sec
    1/4 mile 15.0 @ 97mph

    2003 Audi A4 1.8T spec according to cars.com
    FWD
    1.8L engine
    170 HP
    166 TQ
    0-60 8.4 sec
    1/4 mile 16.7 @ 83mph

Now with putting in a 1000 USD you may boost the power up by 40 HP and get a little closer to the TL-S.

Maybe we should compare apples to apples:
    Audi A4 3.0 spec accoring to cars.com
    FWD
    3.0L engine
    220 HP
    221 TQ
    0-60 6.4 sec
    1/4 mile 14.9 @ 94mph

And now the Acura TL-S and Audi 3.0 sticker price was 31K back in 2003 new.

I know there are ways to get the 1.8L to the preformance you looking for, but I like to bring you back to reality that this is not done with 1000 USD.
There is a thread on here with a guy posting all kind a 1/4mile numbers, this should be a good indicater on what is required to get closer to the TL-S.

    Hope this helps you.

True. I have decided to just wait and get a 540i since i will just chip it to get enough power

    Re: Need Help in Tuning

^ Probably a good idea. Spend a grand for a chip and injectors...that'll make the 1.8T decent and liveable.

In order to out run a 03 TL-S you'll need a Turbo upgrade, regardless of which turbo you buy, you'll need thousands in supporting mods. I'll tell ya, driving an A4 that flies is a very unique experience...but most people would be better off just buying a faster car if speed is really what they're after.

    Re: Need Help in Tuning

Just be carefull when comparing cars. It's very hard to compare apple to apple. Your Audi 1.8T is a great engine and for the size even stock quite speedy (Before I beaten up here, just drive a European Audi A4 1.6 with 101HP or 1.9TDI Diesel with 90-110HP). Tuning this engine is an art and I'm still amazed how much you power some guys get out of this 1.8T and it's still drivable and reliable. Sure all this comes with a cost.
I personally also believe in more power needs a bigger engine size, and this comes with more cost as well. But that's just my opinion. I was looking at the 540i manual, but got the A4 3.0 due to the better price (or newer model). Or maybe I like the Audi technology and interior feel.

    Re: Need Help in Tuning

i myself picked out the A4 instead of the 325 just because of the Quattro. Believe me, if you are not a professional driver, your Quattro can still out handle the rwd 3 series in curves. Beautiful handling, just the lack of power. I will also think of getting the S4 before 540i
