Call up Brian at Avalon. He's selling new e-codes that are significantly cheaper than the Valeo ones. They are made by a subsidiary of Hella and Avalon is the exclusive USA reseller for them.

They are H7 lamps, but he also sells H7 55W HID kits (oem is D1S 35W, which isn't as bright and is much more expensive to replace bulbs). So for the price of Valeo e-codes (which are on galactic backorder), you could have these lamps plus 55W. Then you could sell your old lights as a kit or in parts. If you play your cards right, you might come out barely spending any money.

Give him a ring: 303 400 3001. These lamps are on super-sale at the moment ($375/pair)!

One of my friends is expecting his set to show up thursday. I might have pictures by Friday.

As for the black center, I see where you are coming from. I think it will look pretty good when installed (esp. on dark colored cars). I believe they made it black based on feedback from A4 owners. They also make lamps for GTi's and other VAG cars.

yes, lowest a4, jens is his name.

as far as i know, ecodes are no longer being manufactured in the united states.

jens lives in germany and gets the lights directly from a german audi dealer. i purchased a single ecode from him after an accident. the only source i know of now for brand new ecodes.

E-Codes were never made in the US.

running a rebased xenon bulb in a non-xenon housing is not a good idea.

no, not heat. the fact that a headlamp designed for a xenon bulb (be it reflector or projector) is intrinsically different than one designed for a halogen. look at how light is output with a xenon bulb vs halogen (filament).

Re: Where can I buy Ecode Headlights?

I would agree with a reflector housing, not but with a projector housing. Changing the focal point (exact location of the light source) of the bulb in a reflector housing can create a less than ideal beam pattern and create glare for oncoming drivers. With a projector housing, the light bounces off of the rear elliptical reflector and is straightened by the lens. Any light that would be reflected in a a way that could produce glare is stopped by the cutoff shield. Having owned a B5 A4 with H7 e-codes and a B5 S4 with D2S e-codes, I can tell you that Valeo uses the exact same elliptical projector in their lamps, the only difference is what base and clip they weld on to the end. I have taken apart about 5 different projector headlights and compared them. I even have pictures comparing the <2005 (manuf. date) B5 e-codes to the inferior 2006+ e-codes. Unfortunately, I don't have pictures comparing the H7 vs D1S. That said, if you guys are interested, I will ask my buddy if I can take some pictures of his Avalon lights before he installs them. FWIW, He is a non-premium package A4, so he does not have HID lights.

    Pics always help:

So are you saying the projector for these is fine, and there are no heat problems or reduction in light or beam pattern with these housings?

Maybe, but they might run you $700/each. Dealer is not the way to go.
