    Turbo on its way out?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Im getting the dentist drill noise and lower gas mileage, so im pretty sure my turbo is going out. Which is really frustrating cause i just bought the car . Can you guys provide any further insight as to what i should do in this situation? I have a warranty from the dealer that covers the "engine" system but i wouldnt be surprised if that somehow didnt cover the turbo.

So, whats the best option in case the dealer feels hes not responsible to cover it? Should i buy a used one and put it in myself (how difficult is that swap?) or drop (how much?) on a mechanic?

By this way this is a 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro, so i need the sport k03 right?

Re: Turbo on its way out?

lol that's not really an option at the moment. Money is tight to pay for school. Are there any other ways to make sure that the turbo is really dying? i don't want to raise hell and shit with the dealer only to find out it's something small.

Re: Turbo on its way out?

mmm - it could be a bad DV - but take out the TIP - and put ur finger in it and move the shaft around - if there is a "considerable" amount of play then yah ur turbo is bad

you will need a k03s or k03 it doesn't really matter that much

you can get a used one for 100 to 150

and it is a DIY job

Re: Turbo on its way out?

make sure you get a turbo off a 2001 or later a4/passat as they use the k03s which is larger than the k03 turbo.

Re: Turbo on its way out?

Damn grang, that is fucked. lol. Well i called the dealer and let him drive it, and he figured it was "fine". I drive this car, i know what it sounds like, that doesnt sound normal. He wants to say it's fine, whatever. His warranty covers my turbo for another 2 months so if it really is bad, ill bring it back to him in another 2 weeks and have him replace it or itll blow and he can rebuild my engine.

    Thanks for the input guys.

Re: Turbo on its way out?

yah - just go and mess up the turbo

an easy way is just to keep boosting t0 7000rpm - it should go out pretty fast if you do it at least 3-4 times a day

also jack up your car for the control arms - and do the control arm check by holding the wheel at 9 and 3 and rock the shit out of it - if there is play, make him exchange it

also not sure if you checked slugged - but look under oil cap - and if anything request that he check the engine for sludge - and compression test

and those are about the major things that goes wrong with this car

Re: Turbo on its way out?

Sounds like a brilliant idea. I'll get right on that.

I'm not sure if you're trying to be an ass or if im misunderstanding who the joke is aimed at, but if it's me then
I think you misunderstood. The last thing i'd want is to blow my engine, this car is my baby. I was angry that he was treating me like a dumbass so i joked that id let the turbo blow and work the entire engine so he could fix it all. In reality that's the last thing i want to do...

I'm gonna get it to a mechanic to get an official word on it and if it's worked then ill get him to change it out for me.

Re: Turbo on its way out?

Hey, my turbo is starting to make that noise too. Yay. Well, it's not so pronounced, but it's not good either. I'd call it more of a Whirring type noise, at first I thought it was something else, but then I realized it didn't start doing it until after I got pulled over and the cop wanted me to shut my car off, even though I handed him the keys. ... I kept boosting it on the highway, 65-90+, down to 60 and then all over again.

Sorry about your luck. Just don't completely destroy the turbo. The first place all those parts go is inside the engine.

Re: Turbo on its way out?

Yeah it just started so im hoping i have some time to act before it gets destroyed. I drive pretty conservatively now that i know its messed up. A blown turbo would be such a mess

Re: Turbo on its way out?

mmm - doing heavy pulls with ur engine with a blown turbo - will not ruin your engine. A blown turbo after your warranty would be a bigger mess - if he saids it is fine now - and you think it is not fine - your going to have to bring to the point he also agrees

don't even need to go through a mechanic and pay extra

you can complain about the noise, lack of power, your oil is burning up, dentist drill noise - all indicators of a bad turbo

My turbo sounded like that for a while, then the noise went away after I desludged the motor and switching to royal purple.

A lot of you guys a geniuses when it comes to engines compared to what I know.. but.. how would pieces of the turbo end up inside the engine? It's on the exhaust side and is sucking air out the exhaust valve... or so I thought.

the compressor (intake) wheel can go through the engine - but a failing turbo usually has to do with the seals going - those turbine wheels don't break that easily - they are pretty hard

if stuff does goes through your engine it is probably something going through the intake and messes up the turbine blade -

i hear more of fmic pieces going into the engine the pieces of the compression wheel

Re: Turbo on its way out?

I've seen a couple get FUBAR'ed real quick (not quality pieces like the Borg's) and the compressor wheel will bite at the compressor housing and/or start chipping fins.
Not common by any means, just a warning.

Mine has been making some noise for a little bit, but it's not leaking and I checked the shaft play. Yea it has play in it, but it seems ok I guess.
I AutoX the shit out of it twice since it started making noise, and no issues so far.
