Thinking of selling my stage 3 once I finish the tranny rebuild.....thoughts?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm just so fed up with the insane amount of money/time/effort i've put into this car in the last 3months.....

In the last 3 months i've replaced/rebuilt all the major components of the car that go wrong (rear main seal, 02's, turbos, oil cv boots, ect), and this tranny going was just the icing on the cake for me I think. I bought this car with 38.9K miles on it 6 months ago (50K on the dot now), and it was/is in pristine shape and bone stock. I don't beat on the car, it had ONE launch on it before I went stage 3, and I wound it out through the gears maybe 3 times a week. I will have sunk almost $9,000 into this car when in PARTS alone I get finished with the tranny rebuild. Makes me sick to have sunk almost 1/2 half of what I paid for the car into it. I paid OVER 20K for the car, I think asking $24,000 for the car is MORE than reasonable considering if someone had a shop do all what i've had done, it would be more like $20,000 in work + parks. I know the car is fast, and now will be reliable after all this, i'm just at my wits end. I drove my buddies M5 over the weekend, and just fell in love with the car. I really think if I sell it i'm going to pick up an 01-02 M5. I mean, this would be the perfect car for someone looking for the perfect S4, they could beat on it all day and not really worry about anything. Any thoughts? Sorry for the rant.

You're either doing something wrong, or else the devil had it out for you. I've got good karma, and a pristine 142k mile B5 S4. You'll be better off in a reliable V8.

Valid concerns, but selling it after sinking all that money into it is not going to get your money back. Might as well enjoy it and get your moneys' worth.

    exactly!

all the time i see people that put loads of money into cars(either fixing or modding) and less than 5000 miles later, they want to sell.

honestly, why? that makes no sense to me.

sound's like you've taken care of just about everything that usually goes wrong(other than maybe control arms and such). so why not enjoy your now bulletproof car for a couple years...

hey man im in the same boat as you i bought my car with 68k on it for 19.7k and it was a stage 2 with the awe downpipes.... it had an after market warranty on it aswell.... a month or two later boom turbo blows with no signs of it being bad when i bought it ..... so i replaced those and did the timing belt job and sunk like 4k in parts there luckily i did it myself...... now it turns out a k04 i put in was defective and is dying on me now burning coolant so i get new ones for free from borgwarner (warranty on k04s is 1 yr) but i hav the labor to do and i also have a weak clutch witch ill prob be dong when the engine is out along with other little things but soo far ive put in 4k in parts and now the clutch will be like another 600 plus resurfaced flywheel for like 180 and then little seals and what not ill be doing while in there ~ 100-300 and then prob motor and tranny mounts since i have like 80k on the car now plus i want to do an oil cooler so theres another 200 aswell as wanting to buy upgraded oil lines for 200 and maybe a front mount for 300 gosh this things rapes in expense but i love the car like the other night i kapt up (like on his bumper ) to a ferrari fiero (4 seater) but stiill i was impressed ....... anywho man best of luck and if you fix your car will be bullet proof now that everything is done haha peace the ordergoes like this lol

If you're going to do all the work and shell out the money to make the S4 fast and reliable, you should be the one to enjoy it. Once you get it back on the road and are back to rowing through the gears, you'll forget you ever considered selling it. After I got my first S4, the clutch took a dump. I decided to try replacing it myself... and everything that could've gone wrong went wrong. I was depressed and riding the bus for 2 weeks while trying to sort out a mess that kept growing. After finally getting it back together, I considered trading for a 540i. Never happened. Picked up a 2nd S4 4 years later for double the misery

dont you dare! iv been in your shoes before. got rid of my Stage III sedan... rocked a few cars... even an R32. i was really happy w that car... and i tried to stay away... but i was pretty much on AW/AZ all day-everyday... (like iconoclast, lol). in fact he got the M5 u want, but is still on the boards =( lol.

dont get rid of 'er. trust me, you wont be able to shake it... and the M5 (E60, i think?) is a nice car, but it aint a Stage III S bruh. believe me, i know... we have your bad days... n sometimes we throw the idea around of life without the S... but the grass is not greener on the other side. trust me on this one. i know from experience. in the words of the Great MC, they called Hammer, "Ya cant touch this." =)

Not sure, but they're no slouches. You can get them with less than 70-100k miles for low 20s, it's great!

I do know that a mildly modded M5 walked my stage 2+ S4 on race gas.

I know where you're coming from. But after owning two, (stage 2+ and Stage 3 with all mods), and now going with an M3...I can't say i'll ever look back. I don't miss the nose heavy front end, the awful stock brakes, the clunking drive train - regardless of all the drivetrain mounts/stabilizers you get, etc. It's a great car, I miss AWD, but then other times I don't miss AWD...Like when going sideways around a turn. and now I have the peace of mind that my car isn't going to break of have issues...I was always so worried about that with the Audi. So many variables with the drivetrain, turbos, vacuum lines, etc.

you have a sc m3 and think your problems are over with? =P no but any modified car will put extra stress on the unmodified parts. just think about it for a second.. you are asking your tranny to hold more than twice the stock power. that is sort of like asking you to walk around with 160 lb weights on you all the time... (and thats if you only weight 160 lbs!) haha. fix it and keep it man. everything thats been done to your car has been done to mine and more and now the thing is bullet proof and i love it and i beat the piss out of it and it just keeps on smiling =)

Which is the one I drove this weekend as YOU know.......and fell in love with it in the twisties....somewhere the S4 just kind of feels out of place....I hate that in boost going into the corner.....then waiting for boost again when I leave the corner. I want to get on the gas leaving the corner and have the rear step out (sometimes) where I can control it.....the S4 just understeers into the corner....and my God the stock brakes suck compared to my M3's stock brakes.....

Guess you've never driven a stage 3 s4.....can you say 3mpg? M5 gets the same mpg on the highway (26-27mph @ 70mph) It costs the exact same to fill up an E39 M5, as it does my S4 when it's on empty ($55 @ $3.70/gallon)

It's soooo satisfying once you're done the rebuild. The shifter just glides between gears almost effortlessly. You'll enjoy it when it's finished! Call me if you have questions!

My stage 3 gets about 20-23 mpg mixed driving with a few WOT pulls thrown in there. If I'm on the throttle ALL the time, then yes, it sucks back the gas like a liquored up whore.

Lol, mine gets about that mpg too, I was just referring to a 2-4 gear pull, it nets laughable mpg....

I'll be giving you a call in the next week. Can you pm me a price on that high speed fan.....i'm going to need it this summer, since I removed the front fan for my fmic....just want some cheap insurance If I keep the car i'mg going to do some driving events like I did in my M3, and 30min's in boost is never good for anything on a hot day. I'm going to need an oil cooler too, I refuse to do a DE w/o one. Sitting in traffic is a very common occurance in a city with 2 million people, and the humidity is a NIGHTMARE here in the summer, I don't need to overheat and warp the heads.....I would set the car on fire and just take the insurance money then...lol

NO man come on, you must enjoy the car now, you have passed the deadly test of commitment.

If you want the tail to come out on turns then get the diff conversion.. You seriously are experiencing lag leaving corners!!? With tiny ko4s!? That doesnt make sense if youre in the right gear.. not trying to be an ass, I just really have never experienced a lack of power in twisties leaving an apex etc.

The 01-02 m5 is 400 hp at the engine about.. right? You have maybe something close to that at the wheels!

Forget that tank M5.. I just never felt like that car liked revving up and down for long periods all that much..

if youre talking about getting the new m5.. well then do it

But I sure wouldnt trade your car for that v8 m5.. just my opinion

Hope everything works out for you man!

hey bro, thanks for the kind words! I was talking about the 00-05 M5 which is the 400hp V8, I know for a fact the S4 is MUCH, MUCH faster. At the drag strip where the tranny took a dump, my buddy with the M5 was there, and I was trapping 4-5 mph faster than him.....mind you I was waiting a FULL second between the 1-2 shift....so it would have been more like 7-8 had I been able to shift which is a HUGE margin in the 1/8th mile.

PS: I know I need to finish uploading those pictures in my build thread, i've just been so busy lately. It will be done by Wed., promise!

(and thats if you only weight 160 lbs!) haha. fix it and keep it man. everything thats been done to your car has been done to mine and more and now the thing is bullet proof and i love it and i beat the piss out of it and it just keeps on smiling =)
Most of my problems should be over with, hopefully. Everything that commonly goes wrong with this car has already been fixed.

I'm not sure if you know much about BMWs, or the E46 M3s more specifically, but that analogy doesn't hold too much weight. The BMW tranny (Getrag) is the same tranny they run in Supras, and how much can those hold? 700-900whp? Yes. It's an incredible tranny, BMW knows what they're doing. It has far less stress on it too, since it's RWD and not AWD.

The motor itself has been shown to hold 700whp on all stock components. The 2.7T can do what, 500-550awhp? I'm not downing the S4 man, i'm just trying to get you to realize why I made the switch. I was tired of always being on that "threshold" in which sometime may break, based on statistics. In my M3 I have at least 50 more whp on PUMP than my S4 and its no where near it's limits with the clutch/tranny/block, etc. That's why I went the route I did. And it's instant power, like Dan was saying with the M5...No lag, and if you have Ko4s you'll experience lag, or else you're in denial.
