    cone filter help question!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
hey guys so i got bored of my drop in so i took the box out and threw in a 3" cone filter and did a bullshit temporary heatshield.....it sounds great i love it but one problem is that the cone filter doesnt stay in place due to it just hanging from the MAF pipe so wtf do i do to keep it in one place??? Do i just use a big ass zip tie???

P.S its fuckin annoying when im in idle because the metal part on the cone touches the bay and results in retarded vibrating noise.....

    Re: cone filter help question!

ok so the piping should be long enough so that the cone rests against the inside of your wheel well and i just zip tied the stock heat shield from the old air box in place for a month waiting for my custom heat shield from a guy on here...if you go to the for sale section there is a thread for a custom heat shield in the engine section...tons of people are buying em...ill put some pics up of my cone just hanging out...no rattling and it doesn't hang at all it sits really snug

    Re: cone filter help question!

I bought a K&N filter, and it is almost too big for the area. It fits fine, but is smushed against the fender part so it kinks a tad but doesn't vibrate at all.

I have all of my materials and will be designing my own heavily insulated heat shield probably this weekend or so. I won't be selling them, but I will post good directions for others that want to attempt the DIY if it turns out.
    Ignorance is bliss.

    Re: cone filter help question!

looking like this has been the general consensus amongst people with cones...as per phosts reply as well...the heat shield i bought works unbelievably well...i drove it ridiculously hard and its chipped and with the turbo glowing a significant red and the engine still running the intake side of the heat shield and intake were cold to the touch while the rest of the engine is unbearably hot

Is there any con to running a cone filter other than the diy fitment? I guess I want to know if it will perform comparibly well in stopping all the crap a regular filter catches.

I don't think there is enough space in the corner to include any sort of a "U" pipe. I think we just have to smush a cone filter in there and leave it at that...

Here's the shield I made if you haven't seen it already. Not much of a DIY in there since it's all custom/modify as you go, but I listed all the steps I did.

Literally just a 034 inlet, with a cone filter on the end with my custom heat shield. Then the snorkel on top.

I had once modified the snorkel so the cone filter sat inside of it. After doing pulls I would touch the filter and it would be nice a cool.

Debating on buying that eBay shield one or going custom. The snorkel sounds interesting though.

I was watching it for awhile but apparently they went out of stock.

It is pricier, but to spend an extra say 30 or 40 bucks to save myself the time, why not. Doesn't look too bad either.

Jake, if you could take a quick picture of the heat shield you threw together, that would be incredibly helpful to those that are looking to eventually do this (like me). I'm also curious how you modified the snorkel to fit the cone inside it?

    Andrew has one of those.

I have a heat shield that wraps half way around the filter, then the snorkel dumps on top of it. Angle the heat shield towards the manifold and you are good to go.

Woah. We posted the same link at the same time hahaha

I contacted RevMotoring, and he got back to me saying they just sold the last one of the previous batch, but they were making more and would be for sale in the next week or so.

As for modifying the snorkel, the portion that pops into the airbox has a seem, so you can take it apart. You take apart the front half and then slide it back into the accordion and the cone filter lays right in it. That way when you are driving the cold air from the front of the car is poored over the top of the filter.

I also ran 2" hose to the fog grill and runs up and is directed at the cone filter. not sure how much it actually does but I'm sure its better than nothing.
