Those of you that have rebuilt your trans, a few Qs inside..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i started to tear down my trans today, and have a few Qs. The trans is broken apart, but doesn't want to fully break apart so i can see what all im going to need before i put a order in to jay. The trans is about 1/2 apart in the middle, but im afraid to really rip on it apart. Is there some secret technique to breaking it down? Or i am good to get physical with it? Just don't want to break anything quite yet, haha.

There is a bearing that is press fit in between the 2 cases. You should either use a steering wheel puller to pull the cases apart, or CAREFULLY use some sort of pry bar, working your way around the case. It does take a far amount of force, as it's pressed on there quite tightly.

So, worked on a it a little bit more tonight. Still, case is not apart. I have it about 1in apart, but doesnt want to fully disengaged. Is there something more to take apart? Any tips from people that have done this?

I used the pry bar, but just worried about getting to forceful with it.

If you've got it separated by an inch, you're almost there. It takes a LOT of force. Just be careful not to damage the sealing surface too much.

Pretty damn easy actually. You just seat the pressure fit bearing before putting the 2 cases back together. It bolts right up without any problems at all.

Re: Those of you that have rebuilt your trans, a few Qs inside..

Alright, got the case off. Important Q, how many bearings should be there when it comes apart? Someone please 12? Thats all i could find. Im not going to go any farther till i get the video. 1st and 2nd gear are shot, and don't look good. All the others look good as far as i can see.

For you guys that have done the rebuild, what was the hardest part?

Any special tools? I know snap ring pliers are pretty important.

GOOD Snap ring pliers, a dentist style pick set, a hydraulic press....that should about cover the important tools list.

And there should be 23 little bearings. You shouldn't have taken out that shaft without watching the video first....now you'll have to buy new bearings if you can't find them all.

There's a trick to keeping the bearings from falling out inside the tranny...make sure you watch the video all the way through before proceeding.

truei didnt use the video since he didnt make it at the time but its teh rod (with gears on the end) that is slid inside the hollow shaft (the shaft with the 1-2 gears) and once opened 23 tiny peaces of bearing will be there....good luck ab18

I removed the Torsen differential housing on mine last night. Was too afraid to go further without the video. Not to mention the smell of gear oil makes me really nauseous. The fumes aren't toxic, right? With luck UPS will have the rebuild kit on my doorstep tomorrow.

The trick is to use a hose clamp and put it on the inner rod right where it comes out of the hollow shaft. That way the inner rod won't slide down through the hollow shaft and release all its bearings into the black abyss of the tranny.
