Max MPG survey, fill up and try your best..

I just thought I would toss up a new thread to keep things exciting. I know that this experiment won't be exciting as it's goal is to see how many miles per gallon we can average.

That being said, fill up your tanks, zero out your computer, both 1 and 2 and see how many average miles per gallon you can achieve in your first 100 miles. It's not that hard.

I'll go first! Filled up the other day and when I hit 100 miles, my average mpg was 19.7. This number was taken when I got home and pulled into the garage. My S4 would never have gotten this with combo driving.

    This might be fun...

We'll see a sudden influx this week of S4's all tailgating/drafting behind 18-wheelers to get the best MPG...

Does that count? OR is that cheating? lol

Re: Max MPG survey, fill up and try your best..

I averaged about 17.8 miles. Driving is not highway but not heavy congestion or traffic lights either.
The best I ever got out of driving highway at average of 80mph is 285 miles so I believe you can easily get 300 while driving at 65 or 70 mph.
But what we all love and hate at the same time is opening it up and we end up with low teens for an average. Gotta pay to have fun :)

Haven't check at 100 miles, but I have a 85 mile commute (each way) from Philly to Holmdel, NJ. The best I've done was just north of 21 mpg averaging about 65 mph on the turnpike with everyone whizzing me by...

yeah thats the suck part about it. and since i drive 23 miles each way...i try to only use its power when there is a reason too....but then again...sometimes you just can't help it.

yesterday there was a twin turbo c5 z06 in front of me....i wanted to see how fast this guy was. he only runs 11.5s but he's only pushing 4.5psi on his motor. www.spdkilz.com to see his ride. twin GT35Rs is just insane...can't wait to see when he starts throwing real boost at it. the car sounded amazing...to bad he was a little to cocky. shook his head at me...like i wanted to run him. i'm crazy but not stupid. i was just trying to peep out the front of his car to see the setup. finally found his website. 548rwhp.

I am getting about 17.2 to 19.2 MPG mix btn city/highway. One way I am doing this is, leaving early to get to work and catching the tail end of traffic or leaving after rush hour so I can cruise at 60 to 65 MPH without stop and go traffic. Plus I get got a new air filtre....lol :)p

P.S 240miles before fuel light came on.....

Re: Max MPG survey, fill up and try your best..

I'm averaging about 19.5mpg right now in 60% highway/40% city driving. The car likes to drive in traffic that moves smoothly on the highway...as soon as the bumper to bumper stuff starts or you hit long stretches of super fast :) open road the mileage starts to drop off quickly.

The only way I've found to maintain mileage in slow traffic is to be the a**hole who idles along in 3rd or 4th gear with 150ft of clearance in front (6th gear at 1,000rpm's is just about 25mph). I try not to touch the brakes or the gas, and just use the space cushion to absorb all the stopping and going the people in front of me are doing. Doing this nets me about 25mpg in traffic as long as I don't have to completely stop every few 50 feet or so.

Re: Max MPG survey, fill up and try your best..

Oh yeah, and when you see a red light coming up that you know the typical behavior of, if you slow down in advance so that you can an roll the green light at least 15-20mph (or as much speed as you can carry), that's 15-20mph that the car doesn't need to accelerate itself to. This trick seems to save me at least 3-4mpg over a full tank than if I drive in the normal way. The goal is to never stop completely at any light (or stop sign).

If you practice the above, your clutch will probably last longer too, especially if you blip/rev-match your downshifts.

Damn, don't get me wrong, I love the B6 and B7 S4's, but damn, most of you guys are getting worse then my 07 5.4L F150 4x4. Which gets 19mpg on all highway, and 17mpg mixed, 60/40 city.

That's exactly what I'm doing. You have to watch out for people behind you when slowing down that way because if you don't step on the brakes they might not stop because they don't see your brake lights.
Also, if I'm going downhill to a stop light I'll clutch in and let the car momentum take me there.
