What does everyone around here think of mustangs?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've always loved fox body mustangs (87-93) and the actual car that got me into them has come up for sale recently. Its a friend of mines, and I have dibs on it as soon as he gets a few little things done with it. It has a 347 stroker with a Vortech S-trim blower. The car makes somewhere in the 500-600 whp range without any spray, and is all around a beautiful car...the guy is as anal as I am about his cars. Though I don't know much about blowers, and can't afford a turbo kit for it for awhile, I'm going to be selling the A4 to fund this car as soon as I can. So I'm just wondering what everyone around here thinks of mustangs?

Re: What does everyone around here think of mustangs?

I for one love them, and can't wait to get another Fox, I miss my SSP Notchback every day. I don't know how much you know about them, but mine was particularly rare, not only was it an Ex-CHP, but it was also a stripper coupe. The damn thing weighed just under 2800lbs IIRC.

It had a 306 with GT-40 heads(real GT-40, not the P's) with a mild street port and smoothed combustion chambers, had them machined for 7/16" studs and used TFS 1.7r roller rockers with an FRPP E-Cam(total lift was something like .528) Also had a ported GT-40 intake(the tubular ones) Had mad torque down low, I accidentally started off in 3rd gear once, thought I was in 1st, and it chugged right along and got up to speed with out a problem.
Had a full Maximum Motorsports suspension setup, the only thing I didn't have was there K-Member. Had some sweet ass custom valved Bilsteins(also from MM) with FRPP C Springs, it handled like a go-cart. It had an 8.8 rear with Moser 31 spline axels, 3.55 gears with an Auburn Differential(LOVED that diff) I was able to hit 160mph once, happened while I was racing another mustang as a matter of fact. I intended to take it to Willow Springs and beat on it, but I worked so damn much back then, I never got to enjoy it like I really wanted to. Ended up parting out the motor(only thing I haven't sold still is the short block) and sold the rest off as a rolling chassis, it now has an 03 Cobra motor w/ a Whipple, and should run low 9's no sweat.

EDIT: I hope your friend isn't running a stock block with that much power, that thing is just waiting to split in half if he is...

Re: What does everyone around here think of mustangs?

^^ Nice looking notch, and no he definitely isn't running a stock block. The motors fully built, it should be able to handle anything I throw at it. That notch should be mean with a cobra motor, I was reading an article today about Whipple's new 3.4L blower. Like yours, his has tubular suspension all around sitting on C/O's and Borbet wheels...yes, it even has a little Euro it in!!!
I don't know all the specifics on the car yet, but he did tell me the only stock parts left on it are the fuel rails and fuel lines and thats only because he hasn't put the new ones on yet!
I'm really looking forward to picking this car up and having some fun with it!!

Whenever you get the specs, post them up, I'd love see what he has done. It sounds like decent car, do you know if he took care of it though? And do you happen to know who tuned it?

It looks like Mustang's aren't very popular on here though, just a few threads down, I posted about Wolverines Turbo Cobra, and haven't got a single reply yet. When I do get another Mustang, it will have a setup similar to his Will this be your first Stang?

Re: What does everyone around here think of mustangs?

He took care of it like his first born, he never ran it hard or even tracked it. As a matter
of fact the motor has under 1500miles (yes, 1,500), not sure about the tuner though. He upgraded to a blown 351 Saleen and hasn't messed with the fox much anymore. I figured this would be a sore subject on these forums, I'm glad you posted up and yes, this is my first Mustang. I've seen that turbo Cobra before and its pretty nasty.

Here's what I know about the car though:
    347 stroker
    5 lug/disc converted
    full 93 Cobra interior
    3.73's
pretty sure he has 31 spline axles
    Tremec 3550 with a Pro 5.0
stock body work with a VERY NICE gunmetal color paint job

I wish I could remember more, we had a conversation about the car for about an hour a couple weeks ago but my memory is horrible haha

Nice, wouldn't happen to remember if its a Dart block? That's gonna be quite the handful on the street.

Not sure what block he used on the build, definitely hoping/assuming he used a DART.
Its a GT hatch, by far my favorite body style for the foxes.

Do you have any recommendations for Mustang forums?

I'm looking forward to learning to drive a RWD car with a decent amount of power!

My favorites are SVTPerformance.com and Corral.net, both of them have tons of traffic, and huge amounts of knowledge, and Stangnet.com is another good one.

Mine had a excellent power/weight ratio, the two quickest vehicles I beat were an SRT-10 Ram, and a 360 Modena, both from a roll and we went well past 100mph both races. But it wasn't something you had to be on guard all the time or it would put you into a telephone pole. Making a turn and getting into half way through was a breeze, power slides were so effortless it was confidence inspiring...

I wish I had a picture to post up, hopefully I can get one soon when I get more specs on the car, how much power was your car making?
I can't wait to surprise some people with the new car, just have to wait until my friend gets a new MAF put on and is ready to sell it. He's not really putting the car up for sale, he's just ready to let it go to someone that will take care of it and have fun with it since his upgrade.

67 Fastback with 351W. Loved it from 16 to 18 when I got sideswipped by a drunk lady in a minivan. Worst part is she had kids in the back.

something like this with the 350 and it was black :(

Re: What does everyone around here think of mustangs?

Never put mine on the dyno, but a friend of mine in Cali has the same combo mine had, except he has GT-40P heads and no port work, and neither does his GT-40 intake. And he is also running an FRPP F-Cam, which is 1 step up in size from mine, and is harder to hide. I could tell people mine was pretty much stock, and you'd believe it, but his is harder to pass off as stock.

He just got his back from his tuner and it made 314whp/358wtq on motor, and 419whp/518wtq on spray. Mine wouldn't be too far off...

I really don't know what to expect from a car making that type of power. The most powerful car I've been lucky enough to drive is a CTS-V, which I actually drive on a fairly regular basis.
What can I expect from 500-600 horse?
Also, my friend keeps bugging me about this...will that much power pull the front wheels on a hard launch?

Like I said before, my car was extremely light making it quicker than the numbers would have you think. It was a stripper coupe, which had no A/C, no power windows/locks/mirrors. The trunk had nothing but a lightweight battery and a little bit of dynamat, plus a rear seat delete. The engine was completely devoid of anything smog related and also had an electric fan, and the hood was fiberglass. Another thing too was the aluminum driveshaft which brought the weight to under 2800lbs with a full tank, which is hardly taxing for an engine with ~360hp/400tq

A full weight GT like yours will probably be in the neighborhood of 3200-3350lbs and you should be expecting some surprised fucking people when they mess with you on the freeway. And you can pull the tires with a lot less HP, but its up to how the suspension is setup. I've seen a Nova that only ran 12.9's, but could pull the front left tire about 2 inches off the ground...

Find out what block he used. Hopefully its a dart, motorsport R or World man o war block. Do you know what heads/cam/intake he used?
At the least it probably has a mexican block, which should be fine for that kind of power until he could get a Dart or something equivalent...

Re: What does everyone around here think of mustangs?

Though I don't know exactly, my friend is not the type to cut corners AT ALL on his cars, so I think its fairly safe to assume he has a top name aftermarket block as the basis for his motor. I'll find out for sure next time I talk to him.
