you would need the rear end and driveshaft as well, i think you need to change the front axles too. and you'll need to change your shifter assembly.

Why would you have to change your driveshafts?

I have not done the swap myself so correct me if I'm wrong but I did research it quite a bit before I decided on the 2.8 5 spd, I spoke with some people who performed the swap and they told me that since the 6spd trans is longer, the 6spd propshaft is shorter, and that you'd need to swap out the axles/hubs/etc from an S4 into the A4. I do remember hearing something about being able to change the output flanges to accommodate the A4 axles/etc.

    Re: s4 tranny in a4?

You need the box, mounts, rear diff, rear shaft and gear linkage. Then it would bolt in as far as i am aware.

I only needed to change driveshafts on my 6 speed conversion as i used a diesel box, i am sure S4's and A4's share 108mm inner cv's if not output flanges from an 016 box from a 4000 are known to fit the 01e box and then in turn fit the driveshafts.

I couldnt find any used so ended up swapping the flanges and hub carriers to a v6 so i could use its shafts as i needed 130mm inner joints to bolt to my 'box

why is the 2.8 tranny better? Better gearing for turbo or just stronger?

direct bolt in, longer gears than the 1.8t

also, i have a question regarding this. some b6 1.8t came in 6 speed, can that trans be directly bolted into a b5 1.8t?

I believe you need to swap out the gear linkage and driveshafts, as they have an odd flower shaped inner joint
