quick question .. other than vag com, how do u tell if a coilpack is really blown? i remember something about pulling a coilpack out while the engine is running???

I didnt check. I picked it up as a spare like when I first got the car.

BTW, I looked at my gap on the OEM platinums that I put in about 10000K ago,
The gap was around 0.24-0.26

Hey, sorry to revive an old thread but did a search and couldn't really find what I'm lookin' for... hope someone can help...

New to the forums (and the Audi world). :) Driving an '03 1.8TQ Avant and had hesitation problems last Friday on way home from work (couldn't go faster than 70kph on the 91! then couldn't go much more than 50kph on way to dealer the next day). I was having a coolant leak (clamp) fixed under extended warranty on Saturday, so I had them check out the hesitation and they called back saying it was coilpacks 2 and 4... they haven't given me a quote but how much should I expect to pay for these locally? I read somewhere I should just get some from the VW dealer and put them in myself? My car's at the Richmond dealer, if that makes a diff... should they be under the extended MSP warranty, or no?

In the CPO guide, it does read that ignition coils (which are really the coil packs) are covered:

Engine – block, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, oil pump, flywheel (non-clutch related failure), camshaft, timing chain/timing belts (if maintenance interval is followed), cylinder heads and their mechanical components, ECM and associated wiring

Electrical – speedometer and sensors, odometer, tachometer, temperature gauges, horns, windshield wiper motor and associated sensor, windshield washer reservoir, fluid level sensor, headlight washer pump and associated components, headlight switch, brake light switch, turn signal switch, emergency flasher switch, door switches, back up light switch, fog light switch, alarm system components, wiring harnesses and connectors (non-modified by aftermarket installations), cruise control components, starter, alternator, ignition coils, ignition locks and electrical components, knock sensors, voltage regulators, distributor assemblies, infrared entry receiver (not for battery replacement), power door actuators and associated switches, sunroof motor, sunroof switches and relays, convertible top hydraulic motor and associated wiring, window regulator assemblies and motors, power window switches and associated wiring, side view mirror motors and associated wiring, sun shade motor, air bag sensors and warning lights and associated components, air bags, seat motors and heating elements and their relays

Hey, thanks for the quick replies and tips! Are these something I can/should replace myself? If it's as easy as sparkplugs and wires, then I'm capable if it's what others do...

OK I just ordered two new coilpacks on Monday I received them today so here's the down low. I remember a site I ordered from about two years ago and the price was wayyyyyyyy less than the dealer, the coilpacks were Beru so I was really happy. The ones I got today are prenco and they have no markings on the top of the coilpack like the OEM or the Beru which has the brand and part number etc. These do come with a waranty off the site so although I'm a little aprehensive I'm going to try them out. I have searched and I can't find the site I got the others made by Beru maybe they just changed suppliers and now they get Prenco I don't know but that's what came up on all the sites I have saved. They will arrive fast because the warehouse is on Bathurst in Toronto but just thought I would put up that info I know some people will not want it because they will be scared of the qaulity. I'm going to give it a try and see I have my spares to fall back on anyway.

how would they know who replaced it?

also, how could you possibly fk this up? I'm probably the least DIY car guy on Audizine, but I wouldn't think twice about doing coilpacks. It's like a frigging lightbulb.

If there's no record of it being done at the dealer, then they can basically say you or some joe-blow mechanic did it and try and defer the warranty work... I'm just a skeptic with these things.

Latest news: they're covering the 2 coilpacks under the MSP warranty and I only have to pay for parts if I want the other 2 replaced at the same time, so it'd cost $95 Cdn for BOTH the coilpacks (like $47.50 each) and I confirmed that they're genuine Audi parts. If I want them to do the sparkplugs at same time, then the whole deal (with the 2 coilpacks) is $243, which I find quite insane, so I'm passing on that "deal". I can't believe they charge that much for like $50Cdn in parts for the plugs and 15-20 minutes of work...
