How often do you guys clean your filters ?

And is there any tricks to take out the filter WITHOUT having to take the entire assemble out.. the clamp on the plastic tube that leads the air into the engine is a bitch .... don't wanna lose an eye over the intake

    THANKS

I took the whole assembly out when I was doing my timing belt.

I clean it every time I change my oil. I've skipped a few times and gone 15,000 miles without cleaning it out. Everything looked fine, rinsed it out with water and re-installed. Don't re-oil it or anything - you'll probably trip the MAF if you do.

did you dry it out completely when you cleaned it before putting it back in ? and you know the O ring that holds the plastic tube that leads air to the engine, what did u use to hold it open to loosen the O ring so you can take the assembly out

You're talking about the clamp that holds the intake tube on right? The one that needs to be squeezed and pulled off? I just used a pair of vice grips....

I dried the filter as best I could with towels and a hair dryer. I also let it sit for a few hours before re-installation.

No problem - take your time, find the right tools and be patient. Robo-Grip pliers work well too . Just squeeze the clamp, make sure you have a good hold on it, and wiggle the tube off carefully and slowly. If you can open the clamp wide enough, you can also use a flathead screwdriver to move the clamp down the intake tube enough to let it go and pull the tube off.
Hold the pliers lightly with your free hand and move them while you get the tube off. This is just to assure that the pliers wont let go of the clamp.

sorry for the stupid questions.. but "Just squeeze the clamp, make sure you have a good hold on it, and wiggle the tube off carefully. " meaning to leave the O ring ON the intake assembly.. or did you leave it on the plastic tube OR did you take it off completely ?

you have to take the rubber intake tube off of the intake assembly.

that was just a tip to keep the clamp compressed so you can get the tube off easily.

once you get that tube off, you can continue to pull the intake assembly out to get the air filter out.
