    Stock intercooler mods

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i was looking at the stock intercoolers and noticing that the ducting to them is pretty good but the airflow doesnt really exist because of the plastic behind them to the wheel well, sooo i was just wondering if anyone has really ever cut louvers or slots or just cut big holes in the plastic behind the intercoolers and in front of the front tires??

The FMIC is awwwfully expensive and the stock ducting is actually pretty good, routing fresh undisturbed air to the intercoolers, just that the air has no where to flow to...
Anyone messed around with modding them at all???

    Re: Stock intercooler mods

If it makes sense then try it. I havent heard of anything like this but if you come up with something that works, you're method will be famous in the DIY world. Especially since it is something that keeps engine temps down people are always trying to keep it nice and cool in there. You should toy around with it and see what you get.

that's a very old and popular mod with the 1.8t's b/c the smic sucked and had the same problem. and there was only 1, not 2. it does work, as countless people have done it before. however, it doesn't look especially appealing, so for an audi, you either better do it neatly or discretely.

I'm sure it would help a bit but you wont notice anything.

Our DSMIC's are very efficient for the K03. Take a look at the intake temps on FMIC's v.s. stock DSMIC's - they are only about 5 degrees cooler on average.

I like the idea but I honestly don't think its worth the time.

Do a Dyno run b4 and after and see if it made any diff. Log the temps as well. sounds lke a inexpensive mod.

    Re: Stock intercooler mods

It wouldn't make a noticeable difference, but I would do it on my car... I remember my TT had the vented plastic, but the A4 sure does not. I'm not sure if you can buy the oem piece that is vented but I have seen others buy shitty pieces to squish in, but if I found a good looking piece I'd totally do it and write up a DIY.

Just have someone log normal, then remove the wheel liners and log again, that will tell you everything you need to know without cutting anything up.

There are vents on B5 S4 and RS4 DSMIC's. That's why the RS4 has the shark gills on the side of the front valence. Interestingly, the B7 RS4 front valences (and copies) have the gills. HHMMMMM....

They must put the vented fenderliners on the high performance cars for a reason... Audi wouldn't do things that waste money just because they felt it might look cool

    Re: Stock intercooler mods

This may work.. maybe also coupled with a metal intercooler pipe will show a noticeable gain. I've been wanting to make a custom IC pipe to help with pressure drop. Think about it, the stock piece is rubber, dont you think that under 19-20 psi the hose would expand a little bit, loosing some psi?

    Re: Stock intercooler mods

I stared at this metal piece that would work the last time I was at the hardware store, but didn't feel like hacking up my fender liner that day. It would be a very simple mod... maybe I'll try it next time I have a free weekend.

so that shark vent comes from behind the intercoolers?? i wonder why the little indents are in the fender liners.... does the rs4 or s4 have those little indents in the fender liners cut out at all?

i dont know about the rubber pipe expanding.. thats some pretty rigid rubber... its probably like reinforced between layers of rubber so it doesnt expand like that... i mean its the same guage stuff that is used for the radiator right?? how much pressure does a hot cooolant system put on the hose??

    Re: Stock intercooler mods

I'm actually going to attempt the mod the OP has stated over the summer. Here's a quick/rough/crude photochop that I completed a few weeks ago based on the theory.

Yes, they do this for a good reason too!

It's involved in helping the diversion of cold(er) air through the front bumper, and helping that air circulate around the inside of the wheel- an effective way of cooling the brakes.

OP: you ever thought about chemical intercooling? That's definitely a possibility too- I believe there's a vendor/sponsor on this forum that has a kit out too.

    Any links to this info?

    I looked at http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/info...cfm?content=59

I'm still kinda noobish on understanding Dyno charts. Does your statement have any validity compared to these charts?

p.s. I have read some other posts from AWE and remember them saying something about the stock intercoolers being pretty good. That's why they had to make it so BIG. And that's probably why there are "noticable" gains.

    Re: Stock intercooler mods

Here is mine, cut out wheel liner and put in mesh should increase low pressure behind ICs and help the air flow through more efficiently. But sorry I have no logging, in fact I've never thought about cutting down a tree... [IMG][/IMG] Oh, and I got the brake thing done too...
