Matching your "New Version" AWE boost gauge to the OEM gauges...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
For anyone that has the newest version of the AWE boost gauge shown below you might notice that it is brighter then the rest of the dash and gauges(or at least mine was) I did a little testing and found that a 220Ω resistor in series with the boost gauge will dim it just enough so that matches the OEM gauges.

You can pick up a small package of about 5 of the resistors for under a dollar at any RadioShack. Cheap and easy fix for any other crazy people who must have everything match

My best effort to show the difference...

Did the original version match better? Good feedback as I'm looking to get a vent gauge...

hmm.. same pictures? do you have an actual picture of your guage after the resistor install?

or did you take a pic of the resstor installed and then brightoned the guage up to show how it was? im confused

Haha this thread is confusing everyone, lol

actlsub9, great job. I plan on getting that gauge soon, and will definetly solder the resistor in series

BTW, how did you find out what resistor it requires? Just trial and error?

First I measured the voltage across the gauge, and then the resistance of the gauge. From that I figured I would start with 1MΩ in series (which would not even light the gauge at all), then down to 100kΩ, and then 100Ω. The 100Ω was close but still too bright so I needed something a little more... 220Ω worked out great. Checked to make sure I was not over the 1 Watt rating of the resistor. Worst case would be 12V across the resistor, with a value of 220Ω that gives you 0.056A... which means 0.69 Watts.. perfect

    Very Nice!
I am not sure if I have the "Newer" gauge or an "Older" gauge, but mines is def. brighter than OEM dash... So I will try this out!

So... you just solder in a resistor inline of power, yes? That way it is cutting down the amount of power going to the gauge? Is that how it works?

The newer gauge is the one pictured above and goes to 30psi, the older one went to 25psi. Yep, resistor right inline of power and your done. Now that you guys know what resistor to use it should take 5 mins to fix it.

What are you talking about, why would I photoshop the pic? The pics LOOK identical because they were taken less then a second apart. The camera was in a fixed position and I was using a wireless remote. I was holding a wire shorting out the resistor, took the first pic with my wireless trigger, as soon as the shutter closed I let go of the wire shorting the resistor and triggered the camera again with the remote. The time in between shutter closing for the first pic and shutter opening for the second was probably a quarter of a second. They SHOULD look identical except for the brightness of the boost gauge.

That seems like a lot of work to take a simple set of pics...but for less than a dollar I'm willing to try anything to make that light equal. 220 you say?
