how to: mod 1 piece torsen diff. with pictures.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
me and my friend modded his b6's 1 piece center diff earlier this afternoon.

the 1 piece diff in my b5 was the exact same as his. so all these steps are the same for b5 and b6.

i figured i would let the pictures do the talking. post any questions.

you must knock the torsen out of the housing. hit the shiny part.

i have already seen those pictures. i found them while i was researching the project.

it sounded as if staggered wheels was your problem. and not the actual mod.

    Incorrect...

If you run a tire that is 235-35-19 all the way around, the tires are not staggered.

It has to do with adding preload which gives you incorrect gear lash...

    ...ultimately leading to premature failure.

Re: how to: mod 1 piece torsen diff. with pictures.

this mod does not add shims.

the washers going in the diff are the exact same size as the ones they are replacing.

i find it funny you havent posted in any of my other threads about this mod.

    Greg, please explain....because I am

What kompressed says is true....if indeed you adding these washers (with the same thickness) you should not be preloading anything, therefore the lash should remain the same...............

Re: how to: mod 1 piece torsen diff. with pictures.

    quick question...

if ur replacing washers with ones that are the same size, how does anything change?

i've been reading through all of the threads for this, but i can't seem to understand how it works. i understand the final product and what it's meant to do, just can't seem to grasp how it does it.

anyone care to explain to a simple-minded guy?

The orange on the removed washers is an antifriction (teflon) coating. The washers that go in their place dont have that so there is more friction than there was before.

thanks. this is a good one as well. has some pretty good info in it. http://audizine.com/forum/showthread...hlight=shudder

b6 s4 would be 1 piece. but i checked etka. doesnt look like its an 01e diff. so im not sure what size washers it would take.

since there's more friction, can we expect more wear and tear?

does anyone know what it would cost to get a b7rs4 diff second hand, and if it would even be a plug-n-play option for our cars?

i'd imagine it's much more expensive than other options out there... but i'd be interested to see how they increase the torque bias on the rs4 - THAT would the method i would be most interested in using.

hmm... so 0A3 diffs WONT "drop" in place of a 01E? or they will?

Ian, I was reading through a couple of your threads and I understand how everything works, but I did not find where (or if) you explained how you know the friction of your washers makes the torsen a 4:1 as apposed to a 3:1 or 5:1 or 6:1 etc...etc...

Re: how to: mod 1 piece torsen diff. with pictures.

^my guess was either trial and error with materials (seems unlikely) or because that's the way that rs4 diffs are constructed... hence i asked about that earlier.

but it appears that nobody knows much of anything about the rs4 diff.. atleast not anyone in the b6 forum

torsen supplies all the info anyone could ever want about their products on their website. if you feel the need, go look it up and read it.

but Ian and a few others have spent countless hours researching this stuff for you. so you don't have to.. just like STaSIS.

only, this is a fraction of what STaSIS charges.. and they actually use quality, precision machined washers. instead of shims

Can you point me to where on their website it describes the relationship between the coefficient of friction of the washers to the torque bias ratio.

Ian, if this is something that they told you directly ie: "if you use a washer with a coefficient of friction equal to X then you get a X:X TBR" then just say so. I don't need any proof or anything, not doubting you at all, I'm just curious as to how you choose what material will give you a TBR of 4:1.

Re: how to: mod 1 piece torsen diff. with pictures.

they actually said bronze is a better material to use than steel because bronze will never "weld" to steel. but said steel works fine. even the washers they recommend to use as replacements are steel.

    check #19. http://torsen.com/fsae/fsaefaq.htm

the only thing about flip flopping the washers in the audi diff is they are both teflon coated. it appears the diff they are referring to in #19 uses 1 du4 coated and 1 bronze washer.
