I thought the AWE exhaust for the Quattro Tip is a downpipe back exhaust?

I think what took so long is that he didn't replace his entire exhaust like you did. Therefore it's harder to remove/replace parts.

I replaced the TP before I got the exhaust and it only took about an hour on a lift.

Re: Holy Crap- Test Pipe for Quattro was a B****

A lot of the things were not easily accessible. We had trouble reaching one of the bolts that connects the cat to the turbo. Also we had trouble pulling it out. We ended up removing the intake so we can pull it out of the top. Then we had trouble with the intake hose and putting the clip on it. We were also using jack stands. There were just a bunch of little problems we ran into. The DIY pictures all looked different than what mine looked like, and im assuming that its because of quattro.

lol you're funny, snosk8tr123, did you not have any tools or something? It would have taken me about 2 hours to do it by myself in my garage on jack stands, but I couldn't unbolt the downpipe from the cat (stuck bolts) and there wasn't enough clearance to pull both out at once.

Then I got my good friend at a Chevy dealership to let me use his lift, and it took me a tad over an hour by myself since I knew how to do everything quick.

The writeup is correct IMO, that is what I used. I take it you didn't have the right tools though, because if I didn't have some of the stuff I did it would have sucked.

Yah I did it too and it took me and my friend about 8 hours and we have done it to numerous Volkswagens but unfortunately the top and bottom bolts closest to the block on the turbo/downpipe gasket were impossible to get to, and also the bolts connecting the Neuspeed piping to the back of the test pipe were so close to the pipe that there wasn't enough room for a socket so I had to take it all back out and use a box end...it was a nightmare and I had to do it to one Audi and totaled it 3 weeks later....then I had to do it to the one I bought to replace it...took me like 5 hours still

Hell yeah, it's quiet as stock when driving normally, but at WOT it sounds like a beast. The only thing I hate about it is the farting noise when the waste gate opens. VrrrrrrrRRR FART

Yeah. The driveshaft wasn't in the way at all, it was just pulling the stupid catalytic converter and downpipe down through that small space that was the huge pain in the ass.

The 4 bolts connecting the catalytic converter to the turbo... 2 of them are easy as pie, but those other two you need about 2' in extensions and a universal joint to reach then from under the car. They were extremely easy if you have the tools, but it was kind of a 5 minute guessing game trying to seat a socket on a universal joint on that nut when you can't see anything from under the car That's where a second person would've came in handy to shove it on there for me. I couldn't reach the downpipe/catalytic converter bolts though, that's why I had to use a lift to pull it all down in one piece. One could do a test pipe just using jack stands, but you need to take the downpipe off too... and that was not happening for me.

    ya whiney babies .

short socket driver and 17mm socket is perfect.

i'm taken my transmission out and done my timing belt as well - the TP sounds like a walk in the park after all that crap.

It wouldn't matter if it took him a bit longer, but it was a significant amount of time. I was just saying he must not have had the right tools. The DIY is pretty simple and self explanatory, but the actual work can be quite difficult of you don't have the right tools to do it. But come on... removing an exhaust piece is novice work, even a 16 year old could do it.

phrost, some people might not have the right set of tools or knowledge of cars to complete it.
and no your opinion trying to make as a fact "that a 16 year old could do it." is completly false, i am 16 and i cannot install a test pipe. Therefore i just proved your opinion wrong, he had trouble with it, and didnt have the right set of tools as ill say again, give him a break, he had trouble with the process.

Re: Holy Crap- Test Pipe for Quattro was a B****

I said, "a 16 year old could do it" which does not imply that I feel every 16 year old can, it merely states my opinion that at 16, one has the potential to be able to complete this task. It's not that hard, you could if you tried to. and no, my opinion is not proven wrong yet I just turned only 21 years old, it's not like I'm not young too.

and I was not attempting to make fun of snosk8tr, it is a fact that an 8 hour install is a very long time. I don't want people who intend on installing their own test pipe to come in here and think this DIY is a task they won't be able to tackle themselves.

The fact is, it took them way too long because,
we were using short little ratchets and stuff so i guess that could be the problem.
They did not have the correct tools, and if I didn't it probably would have at least double my time too. That's all I was trying to say
    Ignorance is bliss.

I know, that was directed more towards jdubbs. But don't worry about it though... when I bought my first car, I sat in my parents garage for WAYYY too long with VWVortex instructions trying to figure out how to change brake pads/rotors. I've never really seen a brake assembly before, it took me 3x the amount of time it should have, but it was a great learning experience

All I can really say is everyone has to start somewhere, and start buying your own tools. Decent tools can last you a lifetime, and you're going to buy them as soon as you move out anyway. Your DIY tasks will be so much easier... ask for a $200 or so toolbox for your birthday, and slowly fill it with tools as you need them

Working on your own car for the first time is always intimidating... especially if its a new car and a pretty expensive one!

The satisfaction of installing a mod on your own and driving the car afterwards and feeling the difference is an excellent feeling.

About 3 years ago I needed a write-up to install a snub mount... after installing all of my mods myself, I just changed my timing belt and clutch on my own.

Anyone ever take their car apart this much?

Keep it up - its a great learning experience!

I too didn't have all the correct tools and had a BITCH of a time with the TP! The exhaust was quite a bit easier but still a pain. Especially if all this is your first time like me. John1.8T said it all!!!!
