    Re: Torque Converter gone bad

Hard to make a comment without details. I assume it's a tiptronic. How many miles? Did you go to the dealership? Have you ever had the transmission fluid changed? Did they offer to try this first?

    More info would help...

    vehicle, year, engine, etc...

If its an older A6 or S4 with a Tip, it was likely caused by a bad torque converter lock-seal - well documanted on these cars (also assuming you weren't doing lots of hard launches).

Re the cost, a rebuilt and upgraded TC from a company like IPT will run about $600. Labor about a grand. Go to a dealer and you'll pay more for everything

2002 A6 3.0 tiptronic, 77k, the check engine light is on. Just had the 70k tuneup last year. Where is IPT located? the dealer warned that this type of work on a quattro is serious and an outside repair could cause more damage.

Yes of course they said that - from the sounds of things they stand to lose thousands if you decide to go somewhere else! If you're out of warranty, you should go to a reliable indy shop with experience working on tiptronic trannys. Dealership policy with these transmissions is to replace the entire thing rather than even so much as change the fluid.

Agreed! Find an indy with experienced Audi techs (Audi trained preferably). If it does require a TC, experience with these trannys is important. The TC install isn't difficult, but it is easy to screw up.

    Good luck
