has anyone ever run new wheels w/o TPMS

looking at new wheels, but don't want to spend extra for TPMS. Since Audi uses an indirect system, what would happen if I didn't use TPMS? If its just a light on dash, I don't mind. However, if its an ongoing beep, then thats a problem.

I believe you can disable the light/sensor with a vag-com, but otherwise it should beep once every time you turn your car on and have a light on.

You could possibly ask your dealer to do it (most likely for monetary compensation) or else post up your situation in your regional forum.

Can the new wheels accept TPMS? Why not just move the sensors from the the stock wheels over to the new ones?

just tried it with the "unregistered" version of VAG-COM and this mod seems to require the registered version only.

Been running my wheels without the TPMS sensors for about a month now, it beeps everytime I start it and I have the tire flat light all the time, which sucks, but still trying to track down a registered VAG-COM in my area. Both the Audi and VW dealers were no help, FWIW.

I disabled TPMS through vag-com, it takes less than a minute. I do enable it when I put my winters on as that set has the sensors.

I suppose you have the registered version of vag-com?
so the instruction to disabe the TPMS on audiworld/vwworld is correct then?

Re: has anyone ever run new wheels w/o TPMS

don't understand the logic behind the indirect TPMS that Audi uses. It works only if one or more tires are lower by 25% than the rest. It doesn't tell you the pressure, nor does it say what is underinflated.

The US Government mandated it so drivers would not have underinflated tires, thus some direct systems tell the amount of pressure in each tire. The system Audi uses doesn't do what is required, thus is a waste.

Thank god my 2005 didn't come with the tpms I was nervous when I first put my winter wheels on, because I wasn't sure. ron717 is right though, the system sucks and needs to be re engineered.

I just had the dealer put my TI Non TPMS tires on my 08 Avant and was told that the light could not be overridden via Vag Com on 2008 models. The dealership told me they would not have a problem turning the warning off if they could.

Re: has anyone ever run new wheels w/o TPMS

The dealership can, but I think most of them wouldn't want to or would say they can't since using a vag-com to delete/modify codes isn't a normal thing to do. If one of the techs are enthusiasts they probably would, but the others just wouldn't want to mess up your car doing something that isn't exactly recommended to do.

Not true. Audi uses indirect, which works off wheel speed sensors in the ABS. If it was direct, it would show the actual reading of what tire was low. This system in the 2008 A4 only warns you when one tire is lower than another--this is indirect.

If the 08 which I have has a direct system, then why per owners manual does it state that it only senses loss of pressure when compared to other wheels?

I don't plan on using TPMS in my winter wheels, so what will happen?

Re: has anyone ever run new wheels w/o TPMS

Audi's use a two piece in wheel TPMS sensor designed by a company called Beru. I just went over this in a training seminar put on by TIA.

    http://www.beru.com/english/produkte/tss.php

Maybe this is only in the 2008 models do to the new manditory TPMS systems by law in the US

if you read OneDollarBill's posting, it seems kinda clear that '08 A4 has tire pressure sensors in the wheels thus it's a "direct" system.
maybe Audi didn't want to spend extra money to display individual tire info on DIS.

I believe '08s are the only ones with the direct system....'07 and older A4s have the indirect system (I'm positive I've read this somewhere, but can't find it).
not sure if it's the same way TPMS can be disabled on all B7 A4s, but it'd be nice if it is.

I'm pretty sure that they use the same valve or connect to the valve to read the prssure. you can't just throw them inside the tire.

As for audi not wanting to spend the money, the A8 shows what tire is low.

Re: has anyone ever run new wheels w/o TPMS

I just got my 08 2 weeks ago and the all the TPMS tells me is that I have a tire with lower pressure, but does not tell me which one or what the pressure is.

Like I said when I got my new wheels they removed the valve stem sensors from each of the factory wheels and installed them on the aftermarket ones. Once I verified the tire pressure was correct in all four I told the computer going through the stalk on the steering column "new wheels" and "record tire pressure". It's been fine ever since.

It is a direct TPMS system and is the same one used in the C6 A6 and Q7. Here's some more information about them. In addition, my guess is that most dealers would refuse to turn off TPMS since it is now a federally mandated requirement to have them. It's almost like asking your dealer to install a test pipe for you.
