Terrible Engine Noise when Cold start up

So since I've had my car, i've noticed two things... One; when you turn the key you hear this noise from the rear (which I think is the fuel filter/pump) that I know I have to change asap... Two; when the engine is cold and I crank it over for about 2 seconds it sounds like an old Diesel or something not audi refined. Then all of a sudden when the tack drops from the initial power on the car goes to sounding like a true Audi... Any Ideas what this could be??

Specs on car: 3.0L v6 - CVT - FWD - BONE STOCK ENGINE - 2004 -

ALSO Engine has 60K on it and had the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, tranny fluid, and Transmission Range Sensor replaced at 56k..

what noise are you specifically talking about? is it this strange ticking?
mine does that if i half crank it and let go of the key too early - and then go to crank it again, which i think has something to do with fuel.

maybe if you change that filter it'll knock out both problems. i'd give that a shot first and then check back here and let us know what you find. (your fuel filter is only like, 20 bucks anyways or something like that)

Your fuel pump might just be priming the system... When you start hearing humming and groaning is when you'll need to change your pump or filter.

i get a noise when i start it up just for a sec. kind of like tin cans hitting each other. i dont think its really anything. i was thinking low oil, but if that was the case i would be over heating + other things.

Might be the lifters. Audi and the 2.8 guys say it's normal and nothing to worry about. I don't know. Are you still under warranty?

I get that noise to in my 1.8 when it starts up...it sounds like tin cans rattling then it goes away in like 5 seconds..

the fuel pump should prime when you open the drivers' door....there might be an issue with it if you can still hear it on startup

It's normal. Sounds like a bunch of rumbles and grumbles, then it gets smoother.

I'm glad winter is over for us here. So tired of my nuts freezing to the seat. Now all I have to worry about is my nuts getting burnt [O_O]

Unfortunatly no its not under warr any more (im 1 month out of warr) .... From what im hearing I shouldn't worry about those "tin cans" rumbling in my engine.. It doesn't bother me or anything, it was just odd hearing that from an engine.. I thought I was in big trouble now with the engine, after I just dropped 3k for the Transmission Range senser about 2 weeks ago to be replaced.

Are there any DIY's on how to replace the fuel filters on a 3.0 V6? THANKS SO MUCH

You crank the engine pretty fast.

I usually the turn the power on till all the lights on the dash light up then go away, like 5 seconds even. I usually listen for the fuel pump in the back. You hear that click on an whir for second then stop. Once that goes quiet I'll usually turn the engine over. I've just always done this, think its better for the car.

It would be like someone waking you up from a dead sleep and immediately want you start jogging the second your eyes open.

Give a few seconds for the electrical to all come on and the computer to read everything then turn the engine...might not help this noise of fix it but it can't hurt.

Well, I am hoping it will just be the filter creating that.. Like I said im pretty new to Audi.. I drove a Ford Explorer and a Lexus RX350 before buying this as my main car.. So when i heard that noise I was like HHHUUUU???

I just went to Kragen to try to buy the fuel filter and they only had a FRAM one and so I took it home and when i was opening the box they gave me the wrong type, it only had 1 in and 1 out.. Not the 4 plug holes like mine has.. So I had to drive back and return it.. Same with the K&N air filter I bought for it... They gave me the wrong size (its too small) so now I have to return that also! UGH... know of any places online I can buy my Audi part needs??

I just got my fuel filter from them on Friday. It took all week to get it with FedEx ground but that's cause I live in NJ and it shipped out of San Diego. You should get it rather fast. I think ECS ships out of Ohio.

Ok so I got the new filter installed and that noise in the begining def was from the fuel filter, now when I start it up it doesn't sound like tin cans!

Ok so this might help... I too am leaning towards the cat side vs. the timing belt. Mainly because when I revvv it it sounds like crap ... Ill post a video .... but when the tach is climbing and dropping something in the "middle" section it seems rattles and makes a crappy noise... It goes away once the engine is warmmed up, but try revving it cold and you hear it.
