    Talking Snub mount.....go get one

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
well after having this little cheap black rubber mount sit on my desk for almost a year...I installed it today after work. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! is all I have to say. EVERYONE should go buy one now. and EVERYONE should pay to have it installed ;)

the install really does suck. Took almost 3 hours of bleeding knuckes, burning arms, and leaking washer fluid : but well worth every once of sweat. I had to grind down my snap-on allen wrench but its all good. Aligning the bumper back sucks too.

Also....note when installing the mount back on the block, the top allen bolt was a bitch to start threading. What was happening was because the snub is soo much bigger....its size actually gets in the way of the bolt turning smoothly. Sooo....what I did was use a small file and took off maybe 1mm about 1 cm wide of the snub for the bolt to thread smoothly. Some might wanna consider this.

And after the roadtest, almost every once of sloppyness and harsh shifting is gone. I really cant believe how much smoother and more fun the car is to drive. Well worth every penny even to have it professionally installed. Let someone else do it ;)

And lastly....thanks to eddieman and all the other posters with their write-ups and guides.

I thought the aftermarket mount was stiffer than stock!? Would this make the shift shock worse?

no, cause it takes away the slop associated with the soft stock mount.

    Re: Snub mount.....go get one

I too installed my snub a couple days back, and I hear you on the upper allen bolt! What I disd is install the upper bolt and washer all the way flush on the mount and the screwed the mount to the engine with my fingers, it worked fine , then I installed the two easy ones. I also used a couple pieces of 2x4 to seperate the bumper bracket from the engine to give me the room I needed. I also did my AWE DP's a week or so back and , can say id rather do downpipes than another snub.... Anyway cograts on the install ! Im stopping by a shop called Induktion motorsports to see about a GIAC load !! Take it easy .

I also had an ECS snub mount installed last week and it's amazing how much smoother the shifts are. I read all the posts about how great a mod it is but didn't realize how much of a different it makes ... especially the shift from 1st to 2nd ... silky smooth.

$80? Probably a lot more than that! Current labor rate in my neck of the woods is $98/hr, and if it took this guy 3? I will find out, though, as my car is in the shop to get the aux radiator replaced, I told them to put in the snub mount while they are in there, hopefully it won't require too much extra for the tech. Looking forward to see what this $39 part can do!

    Re: Snub mount.....go get one

I agree , if you can fid a competent mechanic to install the snub for $80 DO IT NOW! It took me approx 3 hours as well, it took 4 for the snub and the splitter... Anyway its the part where you have to seperate the bumper bracket from the engine to get the room you need and even with the bumper mount allighnment nuts backed all the way off its tight!

    Re: Snub mount.....go get one

the bumper has 6 bolts that hold it and the lower bracket to the frame rails, 3 on each side, and one smaller allighnment stud with a nut on it , after removing the 6 bolts,I just loosened the allighnment stud nut all the way back not removing it. That allowed me enough play to put the 2x4's in between the bumper bracket and the engine.

i also installed the ecs snub. But i didnt take off the front bumper.
It was harder to go around things, but i would rather do it this way then taking off the front end.
It took about a good 3-4 hours to get this done taking my time.

Search the boards for snub threads and you will see some older posts where the APR snubs supposedly failed for some people.

I was quoted 2 hrs labor for the snub install. So you're looking at approx $180.

    Here ya go >>> MySnubMountInstall
Within, you'll find my link to the B6/3.0 SnubMountInstall.
It's very similar to the 4.2 but the V8 is just that much tighter in working quarters.

I didn't get mine installed at the dealer, I had it added to the repair order when I dropped off the car, but neither the tech nor the Audi Service writer caught the change. Anyway, they had it pretty much back together before I called and asked them about it, so I could have waited until Monday to pick up the car(except I'll be out of town!), or get it Sat. morning without the snub. Since I was in withdrawal without the car, and didn't know when I could next pick it up, I told them I'd do it some other time. They did quote me 2 hours, and said they'd knock off a half an hour charge for me, so $150 to do it. I might try it myself if I get the time. But I wouldn't mind paying the money if it makes that big of difference?

Its not bad - I did it yesterday. I didnt take off the bumper as I didnt want to have to deal with the washerhoses and lining that thing up. There was enough play for me to get my hands in there after loosening the bumper brackets.

To remove the bumper, I dont know if it gives you much more room to work. People were complaining of scraped knuckles who removed the bumper so I am guessing it is still tight. Just get yourself a pry bar and a 2X4 and prop it up there. The thing that took the longest was the top bolt on the snub bracket. It took me approx 4 hours because I couldnt get the Torx bolts on the bumper brackets loose.

If I were to do it again I could probably do it in under 1.5 hours.

Just had the ECS snub installed along with a Corsa CB at Tyrolsport in Queens. The snub seems to have taken alot of the ropey slop out and I feel more positive engagement now. Everything just feels tighter if that makes any sense.

Think they'll honor the same price for me? I live around the corner from you.

Yup, Stern and Neuspeed. I went with APR because it was most convenient and had one on my B6 A4. No vibration at idle

Is there a best snub mount? Or do they all do the same thing? Just depends on which flavor you want??

    Re: Snub mount.....go get one

I'd suggest you call PureMS and ask what they recommend (they carry both the APR and Stern). I don't know for sure but am willing to bet the ECS one is made by Stern ...

Lots of B6 A4 guys had vibration with the NS one so I'd rule that one out. Good luck !
