Air Ride Suspension. Where do I start?

As it stands I'm looking into a DD that I can put some bags under(and make my current DD a track car). At this point I don't care if it's a quattro car or not. The research I've done on here made it sound like there's clearance issues in the rear of quattro cars.
I want a car thats very comfortable to drive, I'm looking into a 30V FWD B5.

    I found this thread, clicky.

I know almost nothing about the setup and designs of air ride, other than the real basics. I've ridden in a couple mini trucks with decent setups in them, but I want a more comfortable ride.

What should I be looking into for cost? I don't have a problem with fabricating plates & brackets, hopefully that'll help keep some cost down.
Any informational links to get me up to date on how these are setup would be greatly appreciated. Normal ride hieght still in the 24.5-25" range or so, how low can our cas be dropped while parked?

Any pics from under the car or the the suspension when it's finished? I can't seem to find any pics of the rear.

Looked like 98a4 had something started, any updates? I can't remember any of the other people at the moment.
I stole this pic from him, how do these setups ride? Maybe change the bilstiens for something else?

i dont know about the FWD b5's but assuming they are like passats there are bolt on kits. vwvortex has an air suspension forum with lots of good info. mason tech is also releaseing a b5 Quattro kit soon. look up capt obvious's built on vortex, its a b6 but i believe the rear end is similar to the b5 fwd. the pic you posted is exactly what you will need for the fron its a universal air systems bag that slips over any strurt with and OD no bigger that 2.14 inches.

Thanks, I haven't even looked on the 'Tex yet. I was going through some of the links on the other thread and it looks like that "bag over" setup is the way to go, provided there's enough space. Are most struts/shocks 2.14" or less?

I was just on Mason's website, but I didn't see anything for a B5 yet.

mason hasent released the b5 kit yet but its coming soon. most struts are under 2.14 but check. i know the bilstiens are and alot of people use coil over shocks also. i have never looked at the back of a fwd car honestly so i have no idea waht its like. the easy streets are fine they are just about as big as the uni bags tho.

Re: Air Ride Suspension. Where do I start?

I looked into that B6 write up on the 'Tex and I just about fell in love w/ that car.
From what I remember of my old FWD A4 it is very similar to that in the rear of the B6. I'll have to double check in the morning. I'm really diggin the bagged car stuff and now I really want one all the more.

I was talking to a classmate that has a bagged truck about setting up a car, and he offered to help and explained to me how much easier it is in a car than a truck, NTM how easy it really is in general. His is done suspension-wise but not in the body. Once I saw it up on the lift at school I started to believe him on how easy it would be on a car.

We'll see what comes of this, it's in my 2008 plans, so hopefully I can get it done by the end of the year.

Re: Air Ride Suspension. Where do I start?

You can use some universal bags for the front.
Looks like the rears are tough.

I've heard Bagyard makes a rear quattro bag/strut setup but they're about $1500 just for them. No management/lines/etc.

Dudes at Panscrapers managed to build some

Re: Air Ride Suspension. Where do I start?

airlift sleeves arent bad, but airlift is notorious for having nothing but problems with their bags.. and a crimp style like those up there, suck. if you want the ins and outs of the air ride world, go look around on any mini truck site.. vw and audi's seem really new to using most of the parts they are using now and arent quite sure they are buying sometimes. universal air air bags are not worth the coin, altho the whoretex loves em, again talkt o guys who have years of experience with em.

btw, i was a mini trucker for 8 years before i bought this audi.. owned plenty of bagged and bodydropped trucks. i'd personally stick with the GOOD euro air ride shit. i cant think of the company names, but it was all that whoretex was sucking on a yr or 2 ago.. called Euro something. it was expensive but still retained the audi feel in ride and handling.. airlift and universal, regardless what shock you use, will not at all retain that unless you crank your shocks to the stiffest setting.
