    Unhappy RS4 Sway problem, help??????

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was installing a RS4 sway bar last night and ended up breaking one of the bolts that holds the bracket on. The bolt was on the passenger side on top. Is there an easy way to get it out? I am pretty sure I crossthreaded it. Has this happened to anybody else, please help????

    Re: RS4 Sway problem, help??????

thats what I was thinking but I am pretty sure I wont' be able to get in there without taking the exhaust off. Just doesn't seem like there is enough clearance?

To aid in clearance you could cut the bolt as short as possible, then drill with a right angle pneumatic(air) drill and then use an easy out... and if it is cross threaded you'll have to go back with the proper tapp to clean it up for a new bolt.. GL

Can you post a pic so we can see what kind of clearance we're looking at?
    Otherwise, I'd agree with pondside36

I don't have the right angle air tools but it looks like that might be the only option. I just cant see how I could get a regular drill in there. If thats the case I am going to have to take it to a shop. I was thinking to try and heat it up a bit with a pencil torch then twist it out with some vice grips. Any other suggestions?

Ouch guy... I was just looking at the spot on my car but it wasn't on jacks so I couldn't see the back side.. does the bolt go all the way through? If it does you may have enough clearance from the back side to drill and easy out it... just go in the loosen direction or you'll draw it further into the hole. Also you may be able to find an electric right angle drill at Home Depot...

You really need to take a look at the back of it. If the stud is pressed in to the bracket, you can heat it up and pound it out. If it's welded, you'll probably want to take it to a shop to have it drilled or ground out and replaced.

    Well, that's a nice one....
Did you mess with it tonight? How'd it go?

    If it was mine, ........
First thing I'd do would be to apologize to the neighbors....

Then I'd pull the sway bar back off,
and drop the exhaust mounts by the muffler tips, six bolts total

Then, with all that room, bob's your uncle...
Enough exposed you could try to back it out with vice grips.

Cross-threaded & tight enough to snap, it'll take a bit of work to back out.

Got a dremel tool? you could cut a slot, or better two flat sides for the vice grips to lock onto...

    Have fun!

    Re: RS4 Sway problem, help??????

Drill it out and use a new bolt with a nut on the backside. This is much easier than rethreading.

You can go to a muffler shop at about 4:30 PM and they should blow it out with a torch for about 10 bucks.
