Air Filter - necessary to change?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am having the Neuspeed exhaust system installed this week. Is it necessary to change the air filter to a K&N or is the stock ok? I am not ready to put in the Carbonio yet.

Stock is fine. There are no dynos to definitively show the gains on Carbonio but a lot of theoretical numbers. Personally, I don't think it's worth the expense of the gains...if any

Thanks, that is what I thought. I have also heard the stock intake on the B7 is actually very good and well made.

Get a heat shield and a K&N cone filter, it will set you back about 130$ and you get cooler air plus that sweet sucking noise and the pshhhhh sound. I have it and you can deffinetly notice a little thorttle response difference.

Less than $30 if you have some extra aluminum and heat reflecting material around. I recently took this setup up out of my car. While the noise was great and I would definitely say there was a shift in power (not necessarily a great increase in hp), my mileage has been crap and I wasn't going to take the chance of dealer issues in the future.

I just put a K&N drop in filter yesterday (my first mod since purchase last Friday), and there is a noticeable (small as expected) differenced, reduced lag and stronger pull. If you put the two filters side by side you will see why. The factory filter is 3 or 4 inches deep made of the usual dense paper, where as the K&N is something like an 1.5 inch deep. I haven't noticed a sound increase as I hear happens but I also haven't really hammered it yet. Really worth the $50.

Im not talking about a drop in filter I am talking about completelty removing your stock intake and swapping it with a K&N cone filter which you can buy on amazon for 37$ just search for K&N 3 inch cone filter

My comment was not directed to you, but personally I doubt rigging a cone filter that is going to pull more warm under hood air is going to be much of an advantage. The stock box draws in cool outside air in a "ram air" type set up.

+1, I've heard way too many stories about the decrease in power from cones unless done absolutely correct (out of the engine bay into a cool area), but then that also comes with the caution of sucking up unwanted water....

I have the K&N Drop in, it's all I needed. The stock box is great, + with the more flowing filter, I can't say I've noticed a vast if at all increase, but it's good to know it's not getting "suffocated" anymore

Re: Air Filter - necessary to change?

I used to think intakes did nothing. I had a k&n drop in before then switched to a cone filter. BIG difference. I havent dyno'd it or anything but it feels a lot faster, i wouldnt say i gained a lot of power, its just that the delivery is a lot smoother.

Actually with a heat shield you are sucking in cooler air than you would with the stock box because you are still sucking fresh air from the front...

I have heard that K&N's can mess up the MAF sensor on VAG cars - any truth to this?

Re: Air Filter - necessary to change?

Apparantly it is due to excess oil in K&N filters.

i like my afe filter, was ~42$ when i got it, its oil-less and washable.
nothing too noticeable with the filter, a little more turbo noise, and its just a drop-in
