    Quality Aftermarket NAVI Installed Pics

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Since everyone seems to say that aftermarket units look like trash in an Audi, I figured I'd post a pic. In person it matches well, not as perfect as an RNS-E, but not as trashy as a lot of people claim. Plus, a ton of installed pics on here are crappy quality and I think that leads people to jump on the anti-aftermarket bandwagon even though they've never seen one installed in person.

If you have a quality pic of an aftermarket Navi please contribute to this thread.

Thats nice man. I put an eclipse in, I love the sound output and I can do a bunch of neat things with it. (CD changer, internal mp3, Sat radio, dual zone entertainment, DVD playback, etc...) The only thing that I HATE is that the back light is green... I wish it was a red like the rest of the car. I'll get pics up as soon as I can.

It probably is 'photochopd'. I pulled it from Pioneer's site. One thing i've never figured is why they tend to make these units scream for attention. Don't they realize people want very subdued interfaces which tend to fit in better. I can't explain the glossy black finish they add to these units. Why can't they, for instance, have a similar finish like the portable AVIC-500BT unit?

I'm not a big fan of CF but it looks really good on your car . Also clean install may I ask where did you get the trim kit for the D3 from or was it custom made?

Well, I guess I'm violating the rules of the thread because the pic isn't very quality. The flash makes everything look "off", like the silver bezel isn't shiny like it appears. Ignore the ipod and mount. That is gone, replaced with bluetooth.

I installed this years and years ago, when Audi's idea of navigation was a left or right arrow in the DIS (WTF were they thinking?). All the buttons light up red and match the interior.

Re: Quality Aftermarket NAVI Installed Pics

I specifically mentioned these pics were pulled from other AZ posts. They are not of my interior and I didn't claim they were. They are simply some much better depictions of how the Audi interior is not 'ruined' by using an aftermarket setup.

An RNS-E costs around $1000, maybe $1500 with all the options. Aftermarket units such as the D3 not only function better, but you can get the unit, iPod, Bluetooth, harness, and dash kit for about $700-800 all said and done. What holds people back is the non-oem look, and hopefully this thread will show oem is not the only thing that looks good.

All the pics in this thread so far have been using standard, off the shelf, dash kits. Just search online and there are a few slightly different ones.

Lastly, the pic from pioneer's site is definitely stretched wider than it should be.

This is a much needed thread, but it still does not answer any of the questions people usually ask like, "WHAT DASH KIT ARE YOU USING???" It seems this is a well kept secret among aftermarket nav unit owners, at leats the ones that have a nice looking setup. People with crappy looking pictures are quick to tell you lol.

Another question I have always had was, "Has anyone got the DIS to work with an aftermarket unit?"

It's not really a secret as far as I know. Most people use the Metra 99-9102.

Getting the DIS to work means hacking into the CAN bus.

Re: Quality Aftermarket NAVI Installed Pics

most people do use the Metra 99-9102 dash kit. this just gives you the large plastic outer ring which snaps in.

the inner ring is the trick. some people make their own and some use one that comes with the installation kit for the head unit (if the head unit didn't come with the proper one).

for example the D3 does not come with the proper ring, so you need the Pioneer adt-va133 mounting kit as the black inner ring is provided with that one. fitment is good but not great (tiny gap at the bottom, but since it's at the bottom you can't see it)

lots of info here for those thinking about it further

Re: Quality Aftermarket NAVI Installed Pics

This is exactly right. Most people use the Metra 99-9102. In fact basically every pic on the thread uses the same mounting kit. What makes them look different is the inner trim ring and it's fit/placement.

Look at Post #1. Both cars use Metra, but the 1st pic has the trim ring pushed out a little, while the 2nd pic has it more flush..or slightly recessed.
So essentially the 'final look' is determined by a little bit of customization of the trim ring and the placement of the unit with respect to the kit.

    Kits:

    Metra 99-9102
    Scosche AU2390B
    Best Kit BKAU2

Watch out for the Scosche AU2390B. I bought this one only to find out Scosche updated it without changing the model number. It will not fit a double din (the lower half has a smaller opening than the top and functions as a pocket only). All the pics you see online are of the old version (if you order it online you might get the old or the new one who knows).

What inner ring is the 1st pic using?

I went to look at this HU today and I think I'm sold!

If I can get it to look exactly like the first pic I'm in.... so Metra 99-9102 for the outter ring and the inner ring (giving you the 3D look) is Pioneer ADT-VA133?

What other harness etc. do you need?

EDIT: I'm now going to wait until June for the AVIC F90BT. It uses the same fitment harness as the D3 but has way more features including built-in BT and iPOD!

    ^

This thread tells you all the parts and adapters needed to install the D3. You need the ADT-VA133 to mount the unit, unless you make your own brakets, and it comes with the inner trim ring that looks best.

I won't argue, the F90BT has more features. however IMO the D3 looks much better than the new F90BT. The D3 just looks cleaner. The F90BT has a smaller screen, huge silver volume knob, and its buttons look more cluttered.

Re: Quality Aftermarket NAVI Installed Pics

I have an avic-z3 installed...it would be an amazing unit if those fuckbags at pioneer had any decent software engineers working there. There is some shit going on in that unit that boggles my mind....

THAT said, it is a sexy unit with its 7" touch screen and everyone loves it when they climb in the car.

D3 ftw, i have had it over a year now my ipod is in the glove box and pretty much just acts like a hardrive my iphone syncs up to it as well as my lady's phone so you can multiple phones being used by one unit which is nice for long trips. also, the boot screen option is super awesome and i think that its a 'nice touch' for such an inexpensive unit. Anyway, i love it it loves me.... I would like to get the fm sat for traffic though which is the 1 thing i didnt get when i 1st picked this thing up from a fellow azer. i dont give two shits if its not rnse the d3 makes my bose swing and sing; the audio sounds amazing. I also like not having to use 'playlists' if i dont want to as all options on the iPod are available from the head unit.

    love,
