Wheel Bearing(s): Which one(s) did you replace and at what mileage

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello all,

I'm looking for a little help in some data collection regarding wheel bearing replacement.

It seems that at one time or another the wheel bearing(s) will need replaced on any S4. I am looking for some input regarding which wheel (RF, LR, etc.) bearing you have replaced and the mileage of the said bearing.

Also, once I have the time I would like to put all of this information together on a spreadsheet to post on my site.

    Thanks for the help!

Re: Wheel Bearing(s): Which one(s) did you replace and at what mileage

    120k and none changed.

I think people in snowy climates tend to see higher failure rates due to the salt on the roads accelerating rust and eating at the built in seals and causing them to fail.

Shop Called me back and not only is the rear pass shot the rear drivers side is going out too. no wonder it got so loud(69K miles btw). this is a good thing cuz now instead of paying 100 deductible for the one i only have to pay 100 deductible for both. ha sucks to be my warranty company.

Well, both of my rears were replaced by the last owner and I think my driver front is getting ready to leave the party so I thought it would be interesting to see what bearing location had a higher probability of failure. Is that too much to ask? j/k

I would like to thank everyone for their input and will gratefully accept more!

Worst case scenario -- the bearing will fall to pieces in the hub, in which case the hub would want to separate from the spindle making the wheel fall off of the car - and if you catch it just before this happens you may end up having to buy a new hub and/or spindle if they get warped from all of the heat.

Best thing to do if you find yourself in this situation is have the bad bearing replaced as soon as it starts moaning like a ghost since it's only going to cost you more the longer you ignore it.

The hub is attached to the outer CV, and goes THROUGH the bearing. If the bearing fails, your wheel won't fall off.

replaced RR at 110k and now at 120k I think the RR is starting to go out again. this time it's different though. I have the constant ghost moan of hum and yet only when turning left the sound goes up an octave. last time that didn't happen.

Jay, do you guys have an option to buy all 4 wheel bearings for a set price?
I see that each one is priced at $49. (fr) and $125 (rear). Something like $300shippedd.

I think people in snowy climates tend to see higher failure rates due to the salt on the roads accelerating rust and eating at the built in seals and causing them to fail.
That is interesting. Is it just those of us in the "snowbelt" who use salt that seem to have replaced them???

I voted. My d-side rear crapped out around 110K, and the p-side rear not much longer after that.
Looking to get back into after 5 years of VW Golf R luv
