03 audi 3.0 intake

I know they make the hyperflow intake for the s4 and the 3.0 but i really dont want to waste 350 on an intake just for sound...i wanted to know if anyone had experimented by making your own intake and just puttin a K&N cone filter or sumtin in the 3.0.

yeah I have a cone filter and a heat shield, made that my own. it can be done.
it's not hard, get a piece of aluminun sheet .032" thick or something, and do it.

IMO a intake is nothing more than a metal pipe with a high flow filter at the end. I see no point in spending hundreds of dollars on one. I suggest Ebay.

a buddy of mine bough a $50 intake from ebay for his 3.0. Looks great, sounds just as good and easy to install. At the end of the day it'll function just as well as the $300 intakes out there.

I'd be curious to hear how a 3.0 sounds with an intake; back in the day I had one on my Integra, and all it did was make it loud & almost seemed to drop power a little bit.

Maverick, what size cone filter did you use? And did you use any tubing from the intake to MAF and MAF to filter? I'd just like to get some info and build my own, with some nice tubing, maybe powdercoated black, with black hoses too. I like the OEM look, or close to it.

I only used tubing from the MAF to the Cone filter. the filter is 3" diameter

So you mounted the MAF directly on the intake, and then ran a bit of hose from the MAF to the filter? And is that 3 inch inside diameter for the filter? Sorry, I've never bought a cone filter before.

the hose you talked about is actually an aluminum tubing between the MAF and Filter. if you look on Ebay or somewhere, when they say 3", it usually means that the filter will go on to a tubing that's 3" and so the inside diameter of that filter is 3" as well or a little bit bigger. Ebay sells a lot of those cone filters, just type in 3" cone filter and you will find what you are looking for. as for the tubing, you can get it either on ebay or at a parts store. you will need clamps to tie them.
then you need to get a hose to connect the MAF and the aluminum tubing, I forgot the size on the MAF, but you can measure yours and get it. the MAF side is for sure bigger than the tubing side, I guess the MAF side is 4" maybe?
remember, you can get a curve shaped aluminum tube or a straight tube but the tube can not be too long.
when I clean up the mess in my car, i will show you a picture.

034motorsport is selling almn. 2in. 90's thats a good place to start and find something to go between the stk airbox and the almn. 2in 90 coming off the thrtl/bdy. heres a nice one[IMG][/IMG]

Just replace your mufflers if you are only going for sound and will not buy the ebay one for whatever reason, and I see no reason not to, other than it does not have a heat shield which you could make up yourself with some sheet metal.

I love the sound of an intake, I had a K&N FIPK on my old 4.0 I6 Jeep and it made that thing sound mean as hell. But on the Audi I skipped the intake because I knew that it would do nothing power wise, I instead decided to replace just the mufflers on my car with Magnaflow's. Full exhaust on the 3.0 might be good for 5-8 HP, so again I did not see it being worth the $800-1200 price tag of lets say a Milltek catback, so I just replaced the mufflers, which gave me the sound I wanted as well as better looks. It only cost me $340 installed for the two mufflers, less than the cost of a "name brand" intake for the 3.0 and my 3.0 sounds mean as hell now when I get on the pedal, but still quiet and classy when crusing normally.

I may get a K&N drop in filter and hack some holes into the airbox, but other than that my intake is staying stock. And below is a sound clip of my exhaust if you are wondering.

i think mine is the 6 to 4" i'm too lazy to go to the garage to measure right now. haha.

i then use a reducing dia' silicon hose to mate it up with teh MAF. get a couple of clamps, and done.

For everyone else, what are your thoughts on it? I love how it says it will give you 15whp :). I am doubting thaht after reading many of the 'intake' threads but, as per usual, i could be wrong.

Yeah, thats the one he bought. It certainly doesn't give you 15hp lol we both knew that when we were buying it, but from what i understand he likes a lot. It looks great, sounds just as great. I helped him put it on, install was straight forward. All hardware was included, clamps, rubber pieces everything. They also ask you what color filter you want. Since he has a black USP, he decided to go with the red filter.

They have a short, a short with K&N and a CAI style one. Thats their three options.

K&N cone filter is the way to go although it's expensive because that filter wont have rusts build up around the filter.

Are most folks using short intakes or the CAI ones? Either way i am assuming K&N cones would be the best option just wondering which ones people are using :). Thanks for clearing that up for me btw, you = awesome.

yes, I did VAG intake temps. it would get warm while at a light, but get cold as soon as you leave the light. its not for drags, but its great for everything else, like more power on the freeway, etc.

Sold ;). This was the 1st intake i had found for the 3.0 so now... how to make a box ;). Kidding. It can't be that hard with some aluminum cans and duct tape... again, kidding. It would be cool to find a box for sale so if anyone knows of anyone making/ selling/ dreaming about the box (shield) i would love to know.

it is fully sealed from the engine side. it gets fresh air. and that is just a clear cover. the rest of it is thin abs, which with a small torch, can easily bend and shape, or with a heat gun would just take a little longer, but i'm impatient like that : )

umm, that box looks SICK. +2 on the 'if you were to make one i would buy buy buy". i cant believe how clean and matched it looks... which AMG is pops driving? good taste in cars runs in the family i see ;).

picked it up in AZ, off eBay, flew down there with a briefcase, check, and a radar detector. got home to the SF bay area in just over 9.5 hours : ) (excluding the time we spent eating at harris ranch) haha

go figure, i even have a heat shield (granted an ungly one) on my daily beater SUV, but I've been too lazy to make one for the audi. I'll get to it soon!
