Does anyone bother to declare any mods to the insurance company? Probably not worth mentioning a chip, but what about exhaust etc?

At first I wanted to say its as easy as "tell them w/ increased monthly rates" vs "hide em and suck up any repairs", but then it may not be a good idea to try and trick your insurance provider either. I'd say its probably cool not to say anything, and just know you'll have to fix it yourself if anything happens.

Only thing I see causing problems down the line is warranty-wise.....if you get in to an accident w/ modded exhaust, and the insurance company goes to pay for a "replacement," I don't know that they'd just pay for a stock one. At the same time, the dealer would now see the mod and probably void a bunch of stuff if you're still covered.

Just throwing that hypothetical out there, but I'm pretty sure it's up to you what you tell the insurance companies and what you choose to cover on your car. I had a stereo put in my last car that cost just as much as any performance mod, and the insurance company could've cared less; they were just very clear they would only provide the value of the stock stereo before I replaced it unless I started paying higher rates.

    Re: Mods and insurance.

Expensive wheels are a good idea to list, as well as aftermarket lighting and stereo equipment... anything that thieves are looking to rip off.

I have all my Modifications listed, purely because if I totaled my car they would give me $19k, while the car is probably worth $50k with modifications.

Exhaust voids no warranty. In fact I asked my insurance agent about that and he said that the company would insure an aftermarket exhaust! Mentioned nothing about higher rates.

No doubt an aftermarket exhaust will be chaeper than an OEM Audi system anyway, by miles!!
