    Oil Level Question

    Hey guys,

Since Audi's maintenance program covers oil changes only between 10k miles intervals, I changed the oil myself when my car had around 10k miles. I went to Strauss to do that. Afterwards I measured my oil level and it was at MAX. I've been driving for several months since that time. Couple of days ago I decided to clean my engine and found oil spils on the engine cover. Do you think it's possible that because they've put too much oil, the engine spits it through the oil cap?

    Thanks.

    Re: Oil Level Question

that usually is a sign that your PCV valve has failed. Oil leaks out under boost. Have you had any driveability issues? Overfilling shouldn't cause a leak like that. If your car is running fine clean it off and monitor it over the next couple of weeks.

    Re: Oil Level Question

Oil won't overflow from the oil cap if you overfill it. If it is overfilled (that is VERY bad) it will pool up and contaminate the catalytic converter and also enter the intake.

When peoples PCV valves go, oil gets spit up into the engine bay, so that may be your problem. Does it look like it came out under pressure, or is it just spilled? If you're not sure, just clean it up and take it into the dealer for a free fix if it happens again.
    Ignorance is bliss.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I didn't have any driveability issues yet.

Actually I did clean it. Then I drove approx. 100 miles and I found oil spils again. Most of the oil was on the oil cap, that's why I assumed the oil came through it. But the engine cover had some of it as well, so it looked like it came under pressure.

    Re: Oil Level Question

My PCV valve failed and the fix was included under warranty. Don't mean to thread jack but this is semi-related. I try and get my oil changed every 5,000 miles... and twice now (between separate oil changes) I've had to add almost a quart to a whole quart of oil because my low oil light came on. The first time it happened i asked the dealer if that was normal. I had never experienced it with my A6 2.8. They said it was and that these 2.0T engines burn a lot of oil. Anyone else experienced this same problem?? I don't drive excessively hard, in fact the last 2,500 miles I’ve probably driven more conservatively try to see how many miles a can consistently get out of a take of gas. Thanks for your input.
