Bad Idle and I have used the search option

To start I am a newbie. I have been on this site for months now and have found it very helpfull. I have a 99 a4 quattro 2.8 automatic completely stock with 103,000 miles. I have had it for over 5 years. I just recently changed the battery and had all the vacuum hoses changed. After those changes the car ran great for about a month and a half. The car has been sitting for about the last 3 months, but I have been starting it every 3 days. About a week ago, I turned the car on and I noticed that the idle was jumping up and down. When I come to a stop sign or a red light the car stalls. So I put in a fuel injector cleaner in the tank and drove it for about 40 miles. That did not work. I have used the search option and everybody says to clean the ICV. I printed out the directions from AW. The directions say to remove the 2 10mm bolts that hold the intake plenum onto the throttle body. On mine there were 3 10mm bolts. After that it shows a picture of the ICV with the 3 10mm bolts that need to come off. When I am looking at the same exact spot on my engine, the ICV is not there or did does not look like the picture in Kris Hansen's writeup. If someone could help steer me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Also have no codes to give since I do not have a VAG.

Re: Bad Idle and I have used the search option

I have search further and saw a post that said to disconnect my battery for 20 minutes, reconnect the battery, put the key in the ignition and turn it but don't turn the car on. Leave that for 3 minutes, then turn it off and then start the car. That was suppose to reset the idle. That did not work. Any ideas would help.

Re: Bad Idle and I have used the search option

Lastnight I went home, took the MAF off and cleaned it. I am letting it sit for 24 hours and then I am going to put it back on. Tomorrow I am changing my gas filter, something that I have never done before. Any suggestion or ideas would help.

That was another thing I was going to try this weekend. I already have the carb cleaner. Do you know of a good write up for a 2.8?

Re: Bad Idle and I have used the search option

Cleaning the MAF did not help. After I put everything back together the car had a hard time starting. I had to give it gas. After the car warmed up the idle problem was still there.

I was not able to do the fuel filter. So I decided to change the spark plugs and that did the trick.

Re: Bad Idle and I have used the search option

i had the same problem, ended up being the intake manifold gasket.

it wouldn't idle properly, pausing like it was going to stall, and eventually it wouldn't start w/out hitting the gas.
