What's under my back seat? Is it my fuel pump?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
When you start the car and turn the power on before cranking the engine you hear a whirring sound coming from the rear seat area.

Now that sound isn't a smooth whirr when I start now it's a sputtering, then the car starts and runs fine but the normal whirr seems a bit louder.

Anyone know what could cause this?

exactly what it is the fuel pump! either a dirty fuel filter, or a fuel pump on its last leg!

Definitely the fuel pump making the noise. It might be dying but it's possible it could be making the noise because your fuel filter is clogged:

Where should I get a fuel filter?

Do I just order one from ECS?

Does anyone have a link to one. Mechanically I'm good at doing it myself but getting the right part I don't know what to get.

Re: What's under my back seat? Is it my fuel pump?

Ok thanks for the help. I just ordered a fuel pump from http://www.genuinevwaudiparts.com

Hopefully that's it cause I have legal problems I'm dealing with and can't really afford a fuel pump right now.

Is the the fuel pump a hard thing to change yourself? Is there a DIY for the pump, I have on for the filter and it seems easy.

    Thanks again guys.

Why would you not call about the recall before ordering a pump? They replace it for free...

that sucks... most of the time the filter is the cause. Make sure you wear safety goggles!
And you should really check if your fuel pump is on recall!

    read this:

I'll try to find a DIY on the fuel pump

Re: What's under my back seat? Is it my fuel pump?

Dude, you shouldn't have ordered anything. Call audi, regardless of whether u bought the car from them, a different dealer, or private owner. The pump is a safety issue and audi doesn't want anymore accidents. If it is the fuel pump, they would change it for free and fill ur tank for free. I think that may also include new fuel filter. To check, you simply call ur closest audi dealer and talk to the service department. They will ask for ur vin and check their computers. if ur car falls into the right timeframe of the recall, they will do everything.. for free. And no need to bust ur balls working on the car.

You should definitely think about the filter before the pump. Just brought my car to the dealer for the humming that turned into sputtering and they actually replaced the pump first. Brought it back the next day for the same issue and they replaced the filter....all under the CPO though

Re: What's under my back seat? Is it my fuel pump?

    I only ordered the filter.

I am going to call the dealer tomorrow on my break as soon as I get a chance.

If it is under recall I'll bring it in for sure. If it's not though I want at least the filter on the way since it's an easy DIY.

If Audi says its a recall and they'll change the pump and filter I'll just return the filter or I can always hold on to it for the future.

I commute about 100 miles a day so it would be good to have to replace again in a few oil changes.

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

I can't remember, but aren't there two different fuel filters? One has the regulator built into it I believe. I had a problem with my last A4 making a loud sound and it ended up being the filter/regulator and it was fixed for free.

There's only 1 fuel filter in our cars. It also has the fpr built in.

Wrong there are two fuel filters for the audi b6 a4 one ending in g and the other J. One is for a Fwd and the other is for the Quattro. they recently updated the fuel filter, and now end in the Letter L. Also there are Two different Fuel pumps. Fwd is located in the trunk under the Back cover. And for the quattro, it is located under to the rear pass side seat..... The reason for the Failure is really not understood right now, but in order to fix the problem, both pump and filter need to be change. Some say it's the fuel pressure reg. in the filter that get clogged killing the fuel pump. From replacing these things many times, I now that just replacing one at a time, wont normally fix it....... I advise to replace fuel filter first, and before starting the car to check the repair.... replace pump, so that way u have both new before you start. Hope thats a help......

Thanks that's good to know but I don't even now if I can afford a fuel pump right now.

Are there any DIYs on replacing the pump so I have an idea of what I'm getting into so I know if I can even do it myself.

    Filter will be here tomorrow.

I doubt this, only because the 3.0's have the same fuel pump failures and we have a separate FPR.

Anyone with a fuel pump replacement DIY?

The filter is due here today but it's 6pm and Fed Ex still hasn't shown up.

I won't be ordering from http://www.genuinevwaudiparts.com again. I shoulda just went with ECS. Ordered oil change kit a day later then my filter and it came yesterday morning.
