How bad is it to be a bit above the maximum level on the dipstick? Is this a minor thing, or should I drain the oil?

How much above are you? If it were me, I would take some out and i would do it through the dipstick to save time and mess.

I'm about 1/8-1/4 inch above the max. How do you take it out through the dipstick?

That sounds like a lot, drain it off! If it backflows into your intake, it will screw up your MAF, big money! A friend did this with his Porsche.

I would take it out. You're gonna have to get yourself a siphon and a tube to extract it or just drain your oil and redo it. I wouldn't drive the thing as you may build up pressure that could start to push oil through your seals.

Good luck, keep us posted and post a pic of the key scratch.

    Re: Too much oil?

Just loosen up the drain plug a little bit to drain some oil and then tighten it up. Too much oil can cause the crankshaft to dip into the oil causing it to splash and foam. This creates air bubbles and the air takes up space where oil should be and can cause premature wear to your engine.
