JHM Shifter 6 Speed Install Help

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. Everything up until adjustment went just fine. I followed the video step by step and I am bout to tighten the adjustment and I can't get in 1st and 2nd gear. Before I tightened it I had all gears including reverse. Now it looks like I have to push on the shifter like I'm going in to reverse then I am able to select 1st and 2nd but no reverse.
The shifter is curved at the top like the stock one is ... which way does that have to face? Front or back?

If this is the case, loosen the bolt, just enough to make the adjustment, that is closer to the driver. Now move the shifter, i can't remember, either to the right of left and retighten. if it's worse you went the wrong way. Redo it and move the shifter the other way.

I can walk you though it. First of all the bolt that is closer to the passenger side of the car has to be tightened all the way. Make sure that you get the shifter centered front to back then tighten that bolt. You shouldn't need to mes with that bolt until you get the ss shifting into all gears. Afterwards you can loosen that bolt and make the north and south adjustment if it's not spot on.

Now you are left with the bolt that connects the short throw shifter with the transmission. This bolt is the adjustment bolt and you're gonna want to make sure that you can loosen and tighten it with ease, as you're gonna have to do it more than once.

So this pretty much is a right to left adjustment procedure.

Step 1: bolt loose, place the shifter in it's center postion, where up would put you into gear 3 and down into gear 4. Tightern the bolt.

Check shifting, and see how reverse feels. If it doesn't feel right, go to step 2.

Step 2: Loosen bolt and slide slightly the shifter slightly to the left or the right and tighten bolt. Check shifting and going into reverse. I can't tell you ewhich way to adjust the shifter, but you will soon see you situation getting better or worse. If it gets worse, you are going in the wrong direction.

This is a pretty easy thing, you just have to take a step back, and think about it for a few minutes. Think and look at the adjustment at the same time. It's actually pretty straight forward and once you unerstand it, it's a pretty easy adjustment. You should be able to dial it in within a few minutes.

go get an angle finder, and follow Jason's recommendation. Angle finder can be purchased at lowes for ~$10.

I had the same problem, and the angle finder helped me fix the alignment.

Yea looks like I just had to sleep on it. Thanks for the suggestions.
The shifter looks a little crooked but that's not a problem. I'll be changed the boot and the knob tomorrow so I'll go back in there and adjust it. Need to pull it toward me a little anyway.
But so far this thing is pretty impressive. Coming from a GTI to S4 to me it was hard to get used to this tranny/clutch but now there is no more jerky shifts. Everything is much smoother and that notchy feel from 1st to 2nd is gone too. Everything is so precise and you exactly which gear you are engaging. That was my concern before I installed that gears would be to close to eachother and I won't be able to tell if I was going to 3rd or 5th but that's absolutely not the case.
