So I just drove an 05 TT and an 02 S4 back to back

Ok guys. I have a bit of a dilema. Long story short I need a new daily driver/winter beater.

Im throwing around a few ideas, but basically the car needs to be AWD or RWD, Turbo, and stick. I would prefer not to drive a sedan, but that is a compromise I am willing to make.

Now, I never really considered the TT, but my buddy has the 225 roadster, and I like the interior so perhaps it can be made to look decent? Is what I thought. Personally I think the TT looks a little ghey and feminine, but I have seen pics of them tastefully modified to such an extent that they become something totally different.

    So onto the test drives:

TT - I fit into the coupe! (I'm 6'1", cant fit in the convertible). That was plus number 1. The drive itself was decent. Car handles ably and is fairly zippy. I wouldnt call it fast, but I wouldnt call it a slouch either. We come back, I get out and look at the thing and just cant picture myself driving one.

S4 - I wasn't impressed the first time I drove one about 2 years ago so I wasn't expecting much this time around. Let's pretend that never happened. After letting it warm up a few minutes we take off. I floor it and the thing just moves. Shifting into 2nd was a joke though, as it seemed the syncro was beyond finished and the transmission kept grinding 2nd gear. Car had what seemed to be a Milltek or MTM exhaust, carbon ***gor hood, and aftermarket interior trim and seat covers. Could it have possibly been a K04 car? I'm not sure. It was a night and day difference between the S4 I drove 2 years ago, this one being 10 times faster.

Now let's look at the big picture. I am a returning college student. Money is fairly tight. Obviously the reliability of the S4 is suspect at best. Parts are also expensive when compared to those of the TT (aftermarket included). I am mechanically inclined and know how to maintain my vehicles.

I'm keeping it unbiased as I don't own either of the cars.

What do you guys suggest I do? What do I buy? Also if anyone has other suggestions I'm all ears.

    No EVO
Considered the STI. May still be an option but a bit too boy racer for me.
No Volvo S60R (Haldex - No thanks. Yes I know about the TT, but HPA makes an aftermarket AWD unit that distributes toque 50/50 upon acceleration.)
    Nothing front wheel drive.
    Nothing without a turbo(s).

Re: So I just drove an 05 TT and an 02 S4 back to back

I don't understand - if you keep saying how the car looks "ghey" and "feminine" and can't picture yourself driving one - what do you want to hear? That despite your strong feelings on how the car looks, that we should convince you what a manly car it is?

If that's how you feel, you shouldn't let what someone else sway your feelings - I wouldn't. I personally think the TT is a great looking, and fully masculine looking car. Because of the artful styling, I guess some can say it looks "femine" from some angles - I disagree completely. Usually "masculine" in car styling means extremely angular, so anything roundish is considered the opposite. That's kind of a ridiculous proposition.

That being said, the roadster is certainly "rounder" than the coupe is -hence the seemingly larger number of women drivers who own the roadster. But that wouldn't stop me from getting a roadster, if I wanted an open top experience.

Personally I went from a B5 A4 to the TT and I love the way it looks and drives. It's sportier than the A4 yet still civilized and comfortable.

Re: So I just drove an 05 TT and an 02 S4 back to back

I don't think TT's or S4's should be beaters as the prices to fix them along with the parts can be quite expensive. An A4 1.8T with quattro fits more the bill. Or get a WRX. Or get a TT or S4 and a real beater. If you plan on caring for your Audi then I would suggest a TT which is probably the best looking car on the planet. I don't see any feminine in it, but then again I don't find miata's that feminine either.

nope! and if your not ready for it when you punch the throttle, it will snap your neck lol! and just for a example, S4's with the right software and a turbo back exhaust make around 400 ft/lbs at the crank

Not sure you know what you're talking about. A RWD sports car is basically worthless in snow.

Maybe you're "a little ghey and feminine". j/k

No, a Toyota Solara is "a little ghey and feminine", not the TT! Just because women are attracted to the TT doesn't make it feminine. I'm pretty sure they are all straight women.

let me just chime in here and go on record with the OFFICIAL word on the TT being feminine.

    AUDI TT: MANS CAR

    VW BEETLE: CHICK CAR

if anything, the TT is the car that is going to GET you girls- because it looks so damn cool and sexy that they eat it up.

Too bad they didn't have the TT 30 years ago when I was single. Oh, wait, I couldn't have afforded it then.

2004 S4 isn't turbo so it doesn't meet the your 3 requirements. Plus how fast are you going to be driving during a chicago winter? This conversation is very silly. I think for the audi is just to "ghey" and "cheap" and "slow" and think you would be better off driving something else. You don't want to be caught did in one of these crappy audis. They barely make it to 60 in under a minutes, the awd sucks in the snow, and mostly only homosexual men would be caught driving one. If I were you I would look into a bmw with AWD I think that would be a perfect fit for you or may a honda s2000 vertible for those sunny chicago winer days. oh I am 6'3" and have no problems fitting into any audi, are you sure is your width and not your height that is the limiting factor? just a thought, good luck, bmw x drive FTW!

    *shrug*

I was simply being unbiased, it's not my fault most people aren't and get easily offended (such as yourself).

That being said, thanks for the input anyways :)

Like I said, the TT looks good when it's tastefully modified, different wheels, etc. I simply don't care for its looks when bone stock.

why would you want a s4 as a daily driver that makes no fricken sense. Daily driver should be something that is compact/good gas milage thats what i would look for. A s4 wouldnt even come to mind. Get the TT. Btw whats going to be your weekend driver then?
