I went to New England dragway in NH last night for the first time this season. It was a very nice night out (around 65 F) and the place was packed, I only got three runs in, but that was really all I was expecting to get. My car is a stock 3.0 6 speed, unless you count my Magnaflow Mufflers as a performance mod, which I myself do not. I did no weight reduction and had just under a half tank of gas, the car was just how I drive it everyday, except I do still have my winter setup on with 16" steelies rather than the stock 17s. I have raced two other cars there before, my old Jeep for fun and a friends 06 G35, which I managed to pull a 14.4 in, both of these cars were auto’s, so this was my first time racing a standard.
My first run was my best a 15.361 at 91.22 MPH, this was with an awful R/T and launch because the person I was racing against did not stage correctly and I was paying attention to him and not the tree. This was against a Golf R32 3.2, I had him most of the way but he pulled by me right at the end with a 14.9. Here is the full slip of my run...
R/T: 1.069
60’: 2.113
330: 6.391
1/8: 9.880
MPH: 70.75
10000: 12.864
¼: 15.361
MPH: 91.22
My second run was a 15.400 at 90.24 MPH, this was against a Cobalt SS, I was actually surprised that I had him most of the track, I heard his supercharger whine right behind me the whole time, so he must have been right on my rear bumper and expected him to blow by me, he eventually did, but much later than I would have expected, still he somehow ended up running a 14.5. I won’t post the full slip for this run but I did have a much better RT of .392 and my 60’ was 2.139. I spoke to the owner of the Cobalt after and he said it had a smaller pulley to make more boost and exhaust and that he pulled a 14.00 earlier, but he was having trouble getting traction.
Third run was with a friend in the car who weighs around 170, I ran a 15.7 and got raped by some trans-am with slicks than ran an 11.6
Anyway it was fun, my car ran pretty much what I expected it too, Audi specs it at running a 15.2 stock and mine has 78k on it, so it tells me it is running strong still and I am not an awful driver, although I still think the car is capable of a better time, maybe a 15.00 or even 14.9 with a better driver and a little weight reduction. Does anyone else have any 3.0 times to share? The car launches great, while other cars are spinning off the line it just goes, but the top end is where it is lacking, it just lacks the pull that an FI engine has, but a supercharger could change all that. I just am not really sure if it is worth it, yeah it would be fun, but this car is my daily driver and for the price I would almost rather buy some cheap older car that can be made to go fast for little money and use that as my toy.
Oh an on another note 335 Xi’s are sick, there was one there that looked like it was bone stock and it ran a 13.2, I also saw one driving home on the highway and we were messing around a bit, then he just took off and I didn’t even try to keep up. I can't wait to see what my friends new 135 will run once he learns how to drive stick...
