Ran the 3.Slow at the dragway last night…

I went to New England dragway in NH last night for the first time this season. It was a very nice night out (around 65 F) and the place was packed, I only got three runs in, but that was really all I was expecting to get. My car is a stock 3.0 6 speed, unless you count my Magnaflow Mufflers as a performance mod, which I myself do not. I did no weight reduction and had just under a half tank of gas, the car was just how I drive it everyday, except I do still have my winter setup on with 16" steelies rather than the stock 17s. I have raced two other cars there before, my old Jeep for fun and a friends 06 G35, which I managed to pull a 14.4 in, both of these cars were auto’s, so this was my first time racing a standard.

My first run was my best a 15.361 at 91.22 MPH, this was with an awful R/T and launch because the person I was racing against did not stage correctly and I was paying attention to him and not the tree. This was against a Golf R32 3.2, I had him most of the way but he pulled by me right at the end with a 14.9. Here is the full slip of my run...

    R/T: 1.069
    60’: 2.113
    330: 6.391
    1/8: 9.880
    MPH: 70.75
    10000: 12.864
    ¼: 15.361
    MPH: 91.22

My second run was a 15.400 at 90.24 MPH, this was against a Cobalt SS, I was actually surprised that I had him most of the track, I heard his supercharger whine right behind me the whole time, so he must have been right on my rear bumper and expected him to blow by me, he eventually did, but much later than I would have expected, still he somehow ended up running a 14.5. I won’t post the full slip for this run but I did have a much better RT of .392 and my 60’ was 2.139. I spoke to the owner of the Cobalt after and he said it had a smaller pulley to make more boost and exhaust and that he pulled a 14.00 earlier, but he was having trouble getting traction.

Third run was with a friend in the car who weighs around 170, I ran a 15.7 and got raped by some trans-am with slicks than ran an 11.6

Anyway it was fun, my car ran pretty much what I expected it too, Audi specs it at running a 15.2 stock and mine has 78k on it, so it tells me it is running strong still and I am not an awful driver, although I still think the car is capable of a better time, maybe a 15.00 or even 14.9 with a better driver and a little weight reduction. Does anyone else have any 3.0 times to share? The car launches great, while other cars are spinning off the line it just goes, but the top end is where it is lacking, it just lacks the pull that an FI engine has, but a supercharger could change all that. I just am not really sure if it is worth it, yeah it would be fun, but this car is my daily driver and for the price I would almost rather buy some cheap older car that can be made to go fast for little money and use that as my toy.

Oh an on another note 335 Xi’s are sick, there was one there that looked like it was bone stock and it ran a 13.2, I also saw one driving home on the highway and we were messing around a bit, then he just took off and I didn’t even try to keep up. I can't wait to see what my friends new 135 will run once he learns how to drive stick...

good times for sure. What did you launch at since you're using stock clutch? I've been avoiding the dragway since I'm still stock clutch but am supercharged. Skeeball's times were pretty good at 13.6X (SB clutch) without a whole lot of experience and there is room for improvement there. For me, the supercharger is totally worth it, but I'm still hoping for better tuning. Regardless, once I can get a SB clutch and go cat-less downpipes I hope to get mid 13s.

For the launch I brought it up somewhere between 3.5 and 4k, no higher, I didn't dump it, but I slipped it out pretty damn quick, the car did not bog at all and just took off pretty hard. It sucks because I felt my last launch was the hardest/best, but I had my friend in the car and my engine was pretty heat soaked by that point, which I learned def has an effect. I ran my best time in my old Jeep after letting it cool for about a half hour.

I will scan my timeslip and should I just PM Bhvrdr?

I also *might* chip it, and if I do i would certainly race it after to see if it really helps at all. But I think the thing that is going to make a difference and may get me into a high 14 is my driving and maybe some weight removal, or a cold fall night as well...

A 13.6 according to that chart, I have also read the thread about it. Pretty damn good if you ask me, in the thread he also mentioned that he felt there was room for improvement in his run. It is funny how the smallest factors can effect your time. I remember in the G35 I could not get the launch down, my 60' times were really bad and I could not break into the 14s, then somehow after enough practice I got the launch down with little wheel spin, and pulled off a 14.4. It is also funny how when you feel you had a "perfect run" you pull a not so great time, and when you feel you had a bad run you get a good time.

Re: Ran the 3.Slow at the dragway last night…

Times arent that good in my opinion, especially for a 3.0...you can definetly bring them down...

(FYI...your reaction has absolutely nothing to do with what you ET will be)

Here is "something to base your cars performance off of:

    1) My 2002 Audi A4 1.8t quattro car....car had (at the time) 95,000 miles on it
    2) ZERO performance mods (not even an exhuast)
    3) FULL interior (minus spare tire)
    4) HEAVY as hell 18" wheels
    5) (At the time) stock clutch with 95,000 miles on it
    6) It was 97 degrees F that day too!!

    Best 60' : 2.089
    1/8th : 10.104
    MPH @ 1/8 : 69/70MPH

    Just for bragging rights, lol...best R/T : .009

I listed these specs JUST so you can compare them too yours. You have a 3.0 so you can definetly bring that 60' down....I bet you could pull off a 1.9. Also, my trap speed at the 1/8 was the same as your trap speed of 70MPH .... (I have never been to a 1/4 mile strip before.... only 1/8 are local)

Also, I am not a frequent visitor of the dragstrip either....I have only been a hand full of times....just keep practicing!

The 60' is where it is all at!!

Thanks skeeball, I cannot believe no one else has raced there 3.0, stock or otherwise at the track, or at least has a timeslip to back it up. I think the time you ran with the SC is great and it is a shame that we do not have more numbers from SC'd 3.0's to see what they are capable of.

absolutegtr, this is what I want to hear, thanks for the inspiration, I think there is def room for improvement as well, I have only been driving stick for about a year now and am no where near a perfect driver. I also feel that my 15.3 run was less than ideal, so I am pretty sure I can pull a better time, esp. based off your stock 1.8 run. Again on my last run, the launch felt great, but I had a passenger and my car was heat-soaked by that time so I ran a crappy time, but I really think I can get it down to a 15.0 or *maybe* even a 14.9. Next time I am going on a Wednesday when there are hardly any cars there, I made 15 passes in my Jeep on a Weds before, you just get to keep going and practicing until you find out what works best, and that is what I plan to do.
