    +/- of buying a used stg 3 s4....

    what are they?
what should be the highest mileage one would go?

so me and 2 buddys of mine last nite got to the discussing on buying a used S4. (one has a b5 s4 the other has a b6 s4)
anways t hey came to the agreement that if buying a used b5 s4 it should be a stg3. that wayyou KNOW the waterpump/timing belt are already done, and the fact that u wont have to worry about the turbos blowing since they've already been replaced. and that if anything were to go wrong it would mainly be vacuum lines or oil leaks???

    lets discuss....
The same throttle body and corn toon as everyone else.
A ported blower and the mega bitch pulley.
Lots of water and wheels lighter than my bank account.

the oly thing about buying a used stage three is i would ask around on all the forums (or at least here and audiworld) and make sure you buy one from a competant person who didnt crank up the boost and run the thing lean as hell all the time. also this way you know it was babied how it should be (maintenance wise not driving wise ;) ) good luck and research the crp out f them before buying. do not jump on the first one at a good price unless you want endless nightmares.

I don't know if I'm a rare breed, but that has never once effected my decision on buying a car. All our cars are basically the same except for a few exterior mods. Change the wheels and it's almost like a totally different car. If I had the money I would have def bought a stage 3 S4 in good condition and save LOTS of money and time.

I'd say who put it together, a Specialty shop or some shop doing it for the first time?
I have seen cars that were poorly put back together by people before, missing bolts, mismatched bolts. You really don't want that, thats a big minus. (I mean who knows wth they forgot to put in)

The plus would be that you have more reliable turbos in there. And depending if its full stage 3 or 3- you have at least 3k in parts in there, that and more than likely a Timing belt job completed as well. Easy car to build up further.

well see my thing is im not gonna have alot of spare time to spend "building" up the car. my idea was swap out the rims a few interior add ons and be done with it.

I would be more afraid to buy a stage2 than stage3.

I think one major consideration is your plan for this car in terms of keeping it? If you're the kind of guy who wants a fast car and gets bored after a while, I think finding a good Stage 3 is the way to go since all the hard work and punishment (i.e., dropping $5k to $10k+ on the Stage 3) would be taken care of and you can just enjoy it. If you plan on keeping it, and especially if you're mechanically inclined, the prices on S4's are so cheap now you can pick one up and truly make it "your" car.

haha well a fast car yes! is what i want, and in fact if i came up on an s4(even stock lol) it would be the fasted car ive ever owned lol. im comming from a vr6 jetta so.... and yea thats why i wanna find a stg3 already done cuz like u said the hard work is done(even if it wasnt my own cuz like i said i wont have the time to build it up, and even if time permitted and i could afford the kit i still wouldnt do it myself.) and id try to find a stg3 as stock looking as possible so i can add my own few touches to it and be complete

Eh, half the people with Stage 3 cars paid a shop to do it, so they never really built it anyways.

Treat a stage 3 car like you would buying any other modified car. Odds are someone is selling it because it has problems and they are sick of dealing with them.

I'd honestly either go as close to stock as possible, or go stg 3.

Like someone said I'd be pissed if I picked up a stg 1 or 2 car and the turbos went soon after, especially if you were considering a stg3 at the time

    just my .02 though

Yea, like buying a new '08 135i. My stage 3 S4 is one of the best cars I've ever owned but it will be listed for sale within the next week or two. Not everyone is dumping S4's due to not wanting to maintain them properly..
