A6 4.2 or G35x

If you had to choose between a 2000 audi A6 4.2 Quattro with 58,000 or a 2003 Infiniti G35X Sedan with 45,000 which would it be?

Oh lordy would I love to have an A6 4.2, super sleeper and sounds great.

Then again, I am a little biased.

G35 hands down.


The 4.2 is nice and all, but the G35 is nicer in terms of reliability, maintenance, and gas, which that 4.2l just loves to drink. Search the B6 S4 forums and see how much gas mileage they get out of those beasts.

Ultimate sleeper? Um, not much you can do with a 4.2l v8 without paying $$$$. The 4.2 weighs in at 3814 lbs, and the G35 at 3398 lbs. I've seen the G35 sedans blown, and turbocharged. Have fun doing that with your 4.2. Not to mention that the G35 sedans also come with MT as an option. The only A6 ever offered with a MT was the 2.7, and good luck finding one with low mileage.


But again, as you said it, personal preference plays a factor as well.

If you were gonna go that far and buy a 4.2, just save your money and get an S6.
Wayyyy rarer (and sexier) if you ask me.
Now that I would take over a G35 any day of the week.
But I do have a thing for avants...

Ironically, the G35x really doesn't blow the 4.2L out of the water on fuel consumption:

4.2L V8 = 17City 24Hwy 19Mix

3.5L V6 = 19City 26Hwy 21Mix (and these are the RWD specs, AWD will be less)

As for mods, yes, the G35x will respond better. If mods are the goal, the 2.7T is the obvious choice over the 4.2L.

My 4.2 is gold with tan interior, and I definetly prefer the black on black look. Comparing performance the G35 is listed at 0-60 mph in 6.1 which is faster than I expected.

I was going to buy a G35 2dr or a 350Z before i got my A6, drove the A6 and forgot about the other cars, 4.2 hands down, G35X is nice, but isn't classy like an Audi.

4dr g35 is gay... i just had a 350z and will never even think about getting such a light RWD car again seeing as what happened to it. so now im very happy with my 4.2 so audi ftw

The G35 is a little step up from a Maxima, I am currently driving a 2007 G35x while I wait in my A6 and my last car was a 2003 Z.

1. Look into the recalls on the G, 2003 was the first year for the VQ35 and was a bad year for trannys also.

The A6 is in a completely different class than the G and if you really want to compare you should look int the M35.

If the year and miles were identical I would choose the A6 hands down.......

But since the miles are lower, the year is newer, the color scheme is better (black on black) plus the G35X is a little more rare and interesting than a plain G35........... I would have to vote for the G.

I love my Audi but the G sounds like a better deal.

Also what are the prices if you dont mind me asking?

In spite of my Audi bias, I would go for the G35X, you still get AWD. The G is lighter and faster. it'll be more nimble on back roads, use less gas, be a lot less expensive to maintain, easier to mod...
The A6 wide body looks better and its interior is of better quality.

This G has less miles and is newer too.

The G wins IMO

If your looking for aftermarket fun, the G35 is the way to go. There are so many more mods for it, motor and body mods. My G35 is a coupe, but is SO much more fun to drive than my A6 4.2.

Oh and someone said the tranny is an issue. The tranny problems are only with the 6speeds, the autos are a little more solid. Quite a few people over at G35driver.com have had their 6speed tranny replaced.

I would have to go with the audi. I dont like pulling up to the stop light beside myself. A lot less 4.2's out there than g35's. But I also like the feel of the audi vs the infiniti.

The 4-door G35 body style is sooooooooooo lame. It's just flat out ugly IMO. I love the look of the 4.2 C5. So much, I got rid of my 2.7 and got the 4.2

Thanks for all the opinion and advice, I have decided to stay with my A6 4.2. After test driving the G35 sedan for about a week I have no doubt which car is better, for me at least. Not to mention you dont get nearly as many looks and glares in the G35 sedan as you do in the 4.2 haha.
