Is an S4 faster than an S5

I have a stock S4 and met up with a new S5 on the highway yesterday. He apparently thought I was trying to race him and got on it. I pulled on him every time. The S5 looks like a heavy car. Is it? It is a good looking car though.

See the latest thread when we dynoed an S5 with other S4s. 15hp on a street race does not make a susbtantial difference and the quicker reaction driver will probably slightly pull every time and the difference will stay about the same thru out the race. The yellow DTM audi has raced multiple times with the grey S5 in the thread and they have exchanged who was on top.

i raced a white s5 about a month ago coming home from the track. i gave it a pretty good whoopin but i could see that the guy coudnt drive for ish. im sure it would be pretty close

Why don't we look at some bench racing statistics here (what better way is there to determine how fast a car is? ):
S4 - 340 HP at 7000 RPM, 302 lb-ft Torque at 3500 RPM
S5 - 354 HP at 6800 RPM, 325 lb-ft Torque at 3500 RPM

S4 Weight - 3869 lbs
S5 Weight - 3593.5 lbs

That's a 275 lb difference. That's a pretty big difference. And of course 14 HP isn't going to help that much in a race. But 23 lb-ft of torque and shaving off 275 lbs sure as hell will. And haven't we gone over numerous times that an RS4 and an S5 are almost neck-in-neck in a race? That should say something too. And to top that off, I have raced an S5 in my S4. Not saying I'm the best driver ever, but I know enough to have started in my peak torque range and I sure as hell know how to put my foot to the floor. I may not have the fastest shifts but he was walking away fairly easily even before I had to shift. So I'd say an S5 is a bit faster, yes.

People keep talking about auto S5's, but I could swear they're not even available yet. Supposedly they're on their way and will be here soon but I don't think anyone has actually been able to drive away in one yet. Correct me if I'm wrong though, because I'm not 100% positive.

Nope, they're out for sure...took a 6MT out a couple months ago and have seen them around...the difference (in respect to speed) seemed negligible to me IMO

they are out. the rs4 and s5 are NOT neck and neck when raced actually next to each other. the s5 is faster, but a good driver in the s4 would probably be able to make it close.

Hate to break it to you guys, but a S5 will stomp on a S4 stock for stock. Its not even funny. The S5 motor is grossly underrated, it pulls like the rs4 if not stronger in some cases.

I beat a S4 in our demo S5 many times... not by much but did pull on a S4 every time... stock to stock and I KILLED the same S5 in my RS4!!! Not even close!!!

Might have been an auto. I know mine is no faster than anybody elses. I do have a hard time believing that an S5 is lighter than a S4 though.

I doubt the RS4 (stock) does 0-60 in 4.3. 4.8 maybe. The 0.5 sec is a big difference. I doubt the S5 is that far behind (1/2 car) maybe but I bet 60-120 the RS4 will walk away and the S4 will be falling behind the S5. But of course I am speculating just like many others here . I have driven only 2 of them (RS4 and S4) and that comparison isn't close at all.

Well I can confirm 4.7 with a normal driver in the RS4. With a more aggressive drop it could have been far lower, I think, maybe .2-.3.

Well Cargo8 I donno if I'm a complete amateur but close. But as far as the comparison between S5 and S4 Im sure the S5 will win and S5 vs. RS4, maybe a S5 with full exhaust chip intake lighter wheels, and a low gas tank could maybe hang with a RS4 with 2-3 passengers but stock for stock the RS4 will have LED's getting smaller and smaller in its rearview mirrors all day.

my dads best time with a G tech in his RS4 was 4.2 averaged 4.5, but my dad has been racing for years and his launches and shifts are perfect.

I have no doubt that the RS4 is one of the easiest cars to get a mid 4sec 0-60 time in. There is no issue of traction or throttle control, no weird shift points or other factors. Many RWD cars with manual trannys are much harder to launch consistently and without practice a driver in a new M3 will struggle to get sub 5s times. My dad used to have a SL65 and that thing doesnt hook up until 60mph.

I think most of this was debated in previous RS4vs.S5 thread. Those that are in the know having raced both report they are pretty even at 1/4 mile. On track apparently they are very close as well. Several magazines (e.g. Edmunds) have described them as essentially even at 1/4 mile. Audi reports RS4 0-60 4.8 sec. and S5 4.9 sec. Others have gotten better times in both RS4 and S5. Bottom line is they aren't too far apart and therefore, the S5 has to be faster than S4 with equal drivers.

im sorry but you are absolutely wrong about an S5 stomping the S4... You of all people shouldn't be posting about that kind of stuff because you have no excuse for dumb comments. My cousin has an S5, and hes a very good driver. From 40+ we are neck and neck till about 130 where he Ever so slightly starts to pull. I would call that pretty much even.

WTF this thread?????? Based on what an earlier poster said ON PAPER the S5 should always beat the S4 depending on the driver, of course. RS4 should own the S5. RS4 is in a league of its own except compared to R8.

joking all aside. if a 372CHP S4 can't beat me...i'm not seeing the S5 beating me either.
if the S4 i ran a billion times has at least 15awhp more than me (shown by his dyno) then i doubt the S5 is really any faster. i know with direct injection its gaining some HP and may perform better but so is a full exhaust and custom tuned S4. i think it will be close. i don't think it will be anything like pulling hard on me or an S4 unless you can't drive and shift...then you deserve to lose. i haven't got to run one YET
