I personally have never tracked and really want to along with a bunch of buddies. I will try to x-post this in many forums, but tomorrow I will call the tracks and see how much it would cost to rent it out for the day.
We would have to give deposits, etc to make this happen. This is still in the works, but if enough people and there friends want to go I could make it happen.
This track event is open to anyone, novice, pro, etc. I would organize it so people with more skills would run separately from others so no accidents, etc would occur. I want to make this a fun event and have everyone have a blast. Its going to be my first time!!!
What do you think?
no specific location is set, so please throw out names of locations that we could go, that would be good for all levels of people.
it will take time and effort but I would want to do this maybe in may, roughly around may if not june!!!
Also, I want to keep the price for all day tracking to roughly 120, which is normal according to my friend who tracks.
As one who has organized many track events (Buttonwillow, Pahrump, Streets of Willow, Big Willow) for the SoCal ACNA Chapter, i can tell you its not as easy as you think. Besides renting the track, you also have to think about other expenses involved. At a minmum, you'll also need corner workers, ambulance, insurance. Depending on which track you run and the configuration you run, that should determine your how many corner workers you need in addition to the start/finish person. Realistically, a one day track event can easily run you $5K+ per day, especially if its a weekend day which is hard to get unless its in the dead of summer where temps run in the 100 degree range! Another thing to consider is cones, to mark off the turn in/out for each corner. I know some tracks no longer let you use or rent theirs. Other incidentals include clean up fees, PA rentals, garages, etc.
Lastly, since you'll probably attract a lot of first timers who have never been on a track, all i can say is be sure you let people know the proper rules and etiquette on the track, especially how to pass, not tailgate, not encouraging "racing" and what the different flags mean. Having a bunch of noobs on the track at the same time without prior instruction can be very dangerous. Definitely consider bringing out at least a few instructors rather than having an open track day, where you'll be asking for a lot of trouble.
And for the person inquiring about running Calif Speedway, what kind of crack are you smoking? That place wants like $15K/day IIRC, thats why to this date, the Audi Club still has never done an event there. I'd say you would need at least 50 people to break even and good luck charging $120. Glad to hear more people are showing interest in participating in road course type track events, rather than auto-X or quarter mile. My suggestion is before doing any solo track events, be sure you at least have a few events with a formal instructor to be sure you learn thingsproperly for YOUR saftey and others driving on the same track as you. You may think you're a good "street driver" but the track is whole different environment.
