EGT sensor intall writeup?

Saw the thread from november, but the link was for the number 2 (driver's side) EGT, which i guess is a lot harder than the number 1. the link also didn't have most of teh pics, and the ones that exist are for the driver's side. So my passenger's side egt took a dump on me, and now i need a writeup on how to do it since i hate the dealership and will hate myself for takign it there if it's simple.
i can see it right now and i can follow the line, so i mean how hard can it be right?
how hard compared to say, a TBB?

Passenger side is pretty straight forward. It's the braded metal wire that goes through the heatsheild and into the manfold (If you search here or on AW you can find pics of it). Unscrew that, pull it out, follow the wire up to the control unit that's screwed into the back of the intake mani (IIRC it's on the mani... back of the engine anyway). Unplug it. Unscrew it, don't drop screws. Reverse order to install the new one. No tricks to it really. Just take your time.

It's not hard at all. I had to use two different 17mm wrenches to unscrew it depending on the angle of the nut was sitting once turned, one craftsman, one ampro. Just move all the intake stuff in the way and have at it.

Since I pulled off your heat shields, you should see it plain as day. Pull off your accordian hose going into your y pipe and look down at your piggie. On top of it sits a thin 90 degree "thermometer" that goes into your piggie and runs a braided wire up to the intake manifold. 2 nuts hold that on. Unclip it and unscrew it. Pull it out. Reverse install. 1 hour max.

the pass side is really easy ... just go in from the top and you can do it.

the drivers side is tough... if you have a lift it will help since you can bend your arm in weird positions to get to it. you may have to shave down a wrench to get it to fit.

I did my drivers side from the top with a small(6 inch) adjustable wrench. Just unscrew the coolant tank and move it out of the way. once you break loose the sensor unthread it with your fingers and put the new one in. pretty easy just take you time and be prepared to bleed...

Must be nice to finally get your egt sensor. I'm still waiting on mine. Supposedly its in the envelope and ready to ship, the person just needs to drop it in the mail. Whats that take to do? A week to a month right? Yeah thats what I thought too.

But I helped a buddy do his EGT on drivers side 2.7A6, It was a little tight but not bad at all. I can see the EGT on my passenger side S4 and looks like a piece of cake. Just waiting on the part. I guess it teaches me patience.

They're on the dp's before the primary O2 sensors...

The guy is located in California. Want to go on a road trip lol But yeah He's been pretty cool about it, giving me a cheap price. I did send him the money and he refunded it back to me until the part comes. Once the part comes I will send it to him again. So at least I'm not out any money. I realize the guy is busy but its getting to a point that I know how a person can be busy but just get er done. If I dont get it soon, I willl go elsewhere, just liked this deal because it was cheap and not in too big of hurry, but this year would be nice lol.

If it doesnt get done soon I'll def give that place a call you referenced, or if I need some Stage 3 work done. So thats good to know. Thanks man

Well, I thought that you may not always get a CEL. Mine does throw an intermittent CEL but it started because of O2 reading intermittent problems.

Then one day when I went to clear it, I also seen that it showed EGT with intermittent problems.



So I guess to answer the guys question I would say vag it and it will let you know when its not working right.

Personally if I didnt have a boost gauge nor vag-com I wouldnt really be able to tell that I have an egt problem at all. The car runs totally fine, I just notice that at times it only boosts to 5-6 psi, (which you can feel its sluggish)

Other times it boosts normal (I have chip with mbc set for it to max at 15 psi)

That was my first indicator something wasnt right - that it wasnt boosting normal. Then when I did vag it, i seen the egt code.

wow I think that maybe my problem that i posted before today my cel came on and I and was only boosting 5 then 10mins. later I was boosting 15-16 even though normally I boost 19-17 bu the boost gauge was fluttering. Drove the car again before and 5psi again. what code does it throw when its no good my boy is going to vag my car later for me

The codes I got was:

2 Faults Found:
17539 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor: B2 S1: Internal Resistance too High
P1131 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17863 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 1 (G235): Implausible Signal
P1455 - 35-00 - -Intermittent

Now when it boosts to 5-6 psi this usually is what they call Limp mode (at least I'm pretty sure what that is) and there could be a # of things that can cause this, not just the egt.

But yes get er vag'd and that should give you a good idea of your boost problems.

Talk about a let down. You get all excited its finally here to put in and then.... denied.

What you should do, (at least what I did) is find the passenger side, follow the wire ot the box, copy down the part # and use that. Also I know 1 is a redish box and the other is a black box. I cant remember which side is which, also I have also heard that some are both black box's.

I confirmed that already with the guy I'm getting my part from. He said it was the right part number, so I really hope it actually is the right part.

DUDE i took it off, its the passenger side egt off of his 2000 s4, his driver side was broken so i kno it was the passenger side and i took it off. they are all interchangeable anyways there is no way it cannot fit in there, your tryin to put it in the wrong hole

mine has the red box on them now (01.5+), my car is a 2000. the pass side was too short and only 1 bolt fit where the bracket was before. they all plug in from any year s4 to any year box. connectors are all the same. only difference is length. i can assure you it is a 2000 pass side EGT. you can reference the part number on it for reassurance. you will not have any problems. when amc and me did mine with the motor out. i was being a pussy about pushing it in i guess because i thought it didnt want to clip in and didnt want to break it. however, it did clip in with some force and all is good.

I doubt you'll ever get a CEL from an EGT sensor alone. It's usually the associated misfires from running so rich that will eventually give you a steady CEL. Even if those misfre codes clear themselves and the light went away on it's own, I bet if you VAG the car, you would still see an EGT related code

the only way i would get it to fit is if i shaved part of the plug-in down and jammed it in, and even then there's no promise of it working... this i am NOT going to do. I'm taking it up to Fond du Lac tomorrow to get the correct part off an 02 a6.

one reason i know it's not hte passenger is from where the wire comes out of the box. It comes out of the right, going to the driver's side. The passenger should come out the side that the wire will be routed. The Passenger is the rear box, the driver the front. Mine is red that's in there now. the one i got is black. and the plug doesnt fit. mine's an 01.5, so maybe there's a difference. I'm going to keep it so just in case me drivers side takes a shit, i dont have to go thru this whole fiasco again.

dude it came off of the PASSENGER side, the 00' s4's came with both black egts' BUT THEY FIT! dont be afraid, u have it, it will fit, your just afraid

00 uses black boxes for both sides from the factory. 01.5+ uses both red sensors from the factory. they are all the same and all interchangeable, length is the only difference. notice how they all come from the right side? heres a link from vast that sells them, both sides from the right side. http://vastperformance.com/shop/inde...2d05df200f2a17

the clip is slightly different but will work. is yours TIP? writeup says they are different.

regardless, this is from a 00 passenger side, call me a liar, bullshitter, what have you. it doesnt phase me. why your package was postmarked that date, i have no idea. to be honest, i didn't care enough to follow through. i dropped it off when i said i did. you got your part, if you dont know how to install it thats not my problem.

I can understand why you wouldn't want to shave it down to fit but I bet it would still work..I guess they started keying them differently after 00? Both my sides were black and they were plug and play. Either way, hope you get it fixed.
