    Looking into 2004 A6 2.7T S-Line with CPO

I had planned on keeping my B6 A4 Avant a lot longer, but we drove it to damn much in the last year(almost 30k miles!), and now the warranty is up, and I don't want the car I use to cart around the family to have no warranty and almost 100k miles. Not that I have any question of its reliability as its been dealer serviced its whole life, but I just want the peace of mind that comes with a warranty.

We've also been needing a larger car, and the A6 looked to be a perfect upgrade. I've found a few in the price range I'm looking at, and all of them have the CPO, but the only thing that worries me is that at the latest, the CPO warranty will only last till 2010 correct (since the ones I want are made only up to 2004) which is a little over a year and half. And I don't want to be in this situation again in a year and half, but I don't know much about the 2.7T A6.

So my question is, how reliable are these cars? Will I want to start looking for another replacement after the warranty is up on the A6? I would definitely mod it just a little bit, but no more than Stage 2, and it would be religiously maintained while I owned it.

Here is an example of what I've been looking at...

well, our '01 A6 2.7 is just now turning 58K. We've put 25K since we bought it in '04, it's just now going in for it's first major "surgery", upper oil pan gasket is leaking. Since we bought it, it's never had a major problem, a couple of minor ones. Now, that said, there have been a couple of people on AW who have had some issues with them. Even under warrenty, the only real problems we had: battery, wheel bearing, brakes, and a couple of minor leaks that were all covered without issue. This is the first problem that we have had since coming out of warrenty. We bought in '04, car had one year left of original warrenty, and 2 yrs of CPO warrenty. I would say it's been very reliable, I do plan on needing new front brakes before years end. Audi put new ones on in May '05, so it's almost due.

I have owned a 2.7T CPO for 3 years and back when I purchased it the warranty was 4 years or 100,000 miles. I would check the verbiage on AOA and when you talk with the dealer make sure that they follow what AOA publishes. Just recently I have been looking also and found that different dealers use it as a guideline only. Regarding reliability and how good the warranty has been I have nothing but good things to say so far. Knock on wood... I have only had to use the warranty for small and cosmetic issues. the car is a lot of fun to drive and it has the right balance IMHO between elegance and performance. Something I would look at regarding the car above would be the brakes. I had to get mine done at 45k and it would have been $700.00+ if I had done them at the dealership. I am currently in the market for an Allroad avant and it will definitelly be a CPO...
Audi North Scottsdale has a 4.2 that is CPO and looked pretty nice. www.audinorthscottdale.com

We have an 03 with CPO. We got the car in late 2004 with 10K on it. We are just getting near the 60K mark and so far we have had no major issues. Most stuff has been covered. Interior items paint peeling, visor broken, rear sunshade not working. We just had to pay for our first brake job which I think cost is almost $1000.00. and we have our 60 mile service coming up soon. That is probably in the $600.00 ballpark I think. If you ask me $1600.00 for 4 years of driving a german built sports car is not bad.

That doesn't sound bad at all, but why was the brake job $1000? That sounds steep for just brakes, is there something special about them that makes them pricey, or is that the going rate for an A6 brake job?

    Thanks for the info

I'm not sure but from what I've been told by my service manager, our car needs new rotors, they cannot be turned like other makes and thats why it was so pricey. New Rotors and pads all the way around. It may have been a bit less than that. I can check with the wife again on the actuall cost. Its her car.

Most European manufacturers recomend that you replace pads and rotors to avoid problems down the road. In the case of my A6 I could see that the pads had carved significant grooves on the rotors after 45K miles. So in escense if they were machined they would have had to shave a lot of metal before they could get to flaten the rotor surface and avoid the brake pad taking the shape that the previous pad carved. I was able to do mine for slightly under $500.00 and that is because I wanted cross drilled disks and wanted pads that would 1 generate less brake dust, 2 were quiet, and 3 had enough bite to stop my car. I found a certified Audi mechanic that was ok with charging for labor only and I brought all my parts.

I was reading some posts within here talking about how they replaced pads only and their brakes had problems such as excesive noise, rubbing, brake pedal feedback and even someone who almost lit-up his wheel because it was rubbing to the point of making his wheel smoke...
