Im guessing the cable and setting up the cable with a laptop would be the same, but the values for some of the VAG fixes would be different right?

Yeah, this a very smart suggestion, I have Vista and I kinda got it to work once before, but a write-up would be excellent. I lost my Ebay Vag-Cord cord and I'm about to order another. If people could chime in with their input on what OS they're running and how they got it to work with the Ebay Vag that would be great.

I got it to work easily with XP. I followed the write up with perhaps one small difference. I downloaded the install package from the alpha-bid and put the drivers recommended in the wright up in the same folder. Everything went smoothly.

No problems on Vista.

Download the FTDI drivers for making a virtual com port:

Set the COM port in device manager (In start --> Run, type in: devmgmt.msc) and find the virtual com port and set the port to 1-4, depending on what is not in use. Configure vag-com to the right port and you should be good to go.

If I can ask, does it only make sense to get this ebay cable if you are looking to do those few little "personal preference" modifications aka seat belt chime, remote windows/sunroof? Or can this do nearly everything that the Ross-Tech Vag Com can do?

What if I was looking to program a new key fob remote? Would this work???

the basic VAG-COM 409.1 is shareware. which means functions are limited.
even the auto-scan only does 3 scan sections:
-engine (Address: 01)
-transmission module (Address: 02)
-ABS Brakes (Address: 03)

Thatz it.


If you want to have full access to the VAG-COM
(scan all sections
for B6 Chasis Type 8E -> address 01, 02, 03, 08, 09, 15, 16, 17, 26, 36, 37, 45,46, 55, 56, 63, 76
and show all proper codes), u'll need to purchase the key.
if i dont remember wrong, itz $99+ for new user.

I purchased the $99 activation, and I use it on XP SP2 with most of the functions working fine. I was able to do all of the remote mods from www.a4mods.com.

The only problem is that the ebay cable can't clear codes. I get an error message like "professional installation required." If I had to do it over, I would probably just get the full version and cable.

my ebay cable won't let me clear codes from the auto-scan screen, but i can clear them if i go into each individual control module.
