Question Some questions about tires...have some problems...

So yesterday I had the great luck of finding that my front right tire was flat on the way out in the morning. I had the tire changed to my full spare and went and got the tire sealed--or so I had thought--and put back onto the car. It seems to have a slow leak because the pressure seems to be dropping to about 12-15 psi over extended time...so here comes the questions:

    1) Is it true with quattro cars (I have a 2.0TQM) you shouldnt switch out just one tire and that you should have tires of equal wear?

    2) I live in New Orleans so snow wont ever be an issue, but nails are. What kind of summer/wet tire would you recommend that is reasonably priced that I could find in a tire show if I decide to swap out all four?

    3) What would you guys recommend I do in this situation?

Re: Some questions about tires...have some problems...

Okay from reading some posts I see that you'd recommend 4 new tires....the question is now which tire would be good for my situation? I drive in the hot/humid/wet environment of New Orleans and I am forced to traverse some of the worst maintained roads (with a LOT OF DEBRIS) in the country. What should I get!? I have no idea how to pick tires.

BTW I have the S-Line with Titanium

i would recommend pirelli p6 four seasons as an all season tire, either that or the michelin hx mxm4, but the pirelli has better snow traction imo. and as long as your tires arent too far off in treadwear, it shouldnt matter for the quattro.

the pirelli p6 is what I have now...but since snow is off the menu here in New Orleans I figure now might be the time to get some more sticky tires.

I'm thinking some BFGoodrich g-Force Sports...what do you guys think? I want something that will keep me planted in water.

as far as the wear, I've only put 6300 miles on my tires. I drive aggressively but I dont track. How much difference in treadwear do you think there is?

Yes, this is true. Especially if you care about your car's handling performance as well as its drivetrain longevity.

Toyo T1R, Falken FK452, Bridgestone RE750, BF Goodrich KDW2, Dunlop Sport Maxx, Yokohama AVS ES100 are just a few examples.

Swap out all 4 tires for new ones, as stated above. This may not be the most budget-friendly way but this would be the most recommended way in keeping your car maintained well.

Re: Some questions about tires...have some problems...

Quattro is not that sensitive, if you have one tire with a couple thousand miles on one side and a brand new one on the other, it won't notice or care. The difference of the overall diameter of the tires will be so close, it will be insignificant. People run staggered wheel setups with different tire sizes, but they match them where the difference is so close it doesn't have any bad effect.

If it was me and I didn't care too much, I would just replace the one or else the one pair if the opposite tire had significant wear on it. But if you want to go with a different brand you might as well replace all 4.

But I would ask myself, "what kind of driving do I do with my A4?" If you just commute around and don't do much spirited driving really, I would stick with all-seasons for the fact that they will last longer and save you money. Quattro will hook you up with tons of traction, but you only really need "summer" tires if you're going to be ripping around corners, launching, etc.

It's your call though, I'm between both sides so I don't have a strong recommendation, sorry
    Ignorance is bliss.
