Summer is comming.. How do we cool down our Engine??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Guys,

Summer is coming soon.. and we all know that our car is extremely hot. Any suggestions to cool down our engine efficiently?

Heat is the biggest enemy to Turbo charged cars. the 2.7 Biturbo engine is so packed under the hood..

    Any inputs??

I heard by taking away the Carbon Fiber pieces on the valve cover and the covers on the top of the Battery will help? is that true??

I've heard that only minor cutting in rad support was needed.

There's a good chunk of cutting to the plastic surrounds the IC sits next to, nothing a dremel can't handle.

Didn't stop me from ordering a set today.

Personally, I'd rather cut plastic on an irrelevant part of the car than hack up or remove a crash bar like the alternative (for me) IC...ebay front mount... Plus, the whole stealth factor with a SMIC was a big factor, never been a fan of front mount look with pipes sticking out everywhere. Oh yea, doesn't hurt that it performs better too

I agree with bumper bar, it's the main reason i choose smic. And in 2nd thought, i bielive that air will cross more easily thru cooler since there's no obstacles behind them (like condensor or radiator). And finally we only have 2'' volume less than fmic.

Add to the list shorter piping for less lag and less silicone connections for places to leak...

Oh yea make sure you've got enough T-bolt clamps.

My wussy clamps wouldn't hold so I had to swap them out..

I think they only give you 6 T-Bolt Clamps in the kit.

Re: Summer is comming.. How do we cool down our Engine??

Add an oil cooler. Either RS4 oil cooler/$$$ or Matrix oil cooler/$ or Avalon oil cooler/$$.
This will help to cool the engine down, especially for those that lives in the hotter & more humid climates. And also, flush or at least change your coolant each year before summer or at least once every 2 years is a good idea as well.

ICs does not "help" to cool an engine down directly, it helps in preventing power loss due to heat soak and thus the need to have the engine/turbos working harder to achieve the same power output. Overheating have been noted due to excessively large FMICs without oil coolers due to the FMIC blocking off large areas of the radiator. This is why a properly designed FMIC kit will come with oil cooler, ie: Autospeed's FMIC.

Didn't notice you have an actual RS4.

In that case, what type of oil temperture are you seeing that makes you think you need additional cooling for the engine ?

Yea, haha i actually own the real deal RS4..

I maybe wrong, but i am actually looking at the water temp gauge.. I haven't put much attention, however, it's on the low side if i am not pushing the car.

For the water temp. my car is always over 90 degree C. I will say around 91 degree C for normal cruising and 95-96 degree C after some pulls. Is that normal?

can you tell an oil cooler only to come on in hot hot conditions? I know you dont want your oil to be tooo cool or your engine wont run efficiently correct ? how cool does an oil cooler get ya goin? i thought they were useful for the track mainly

IIRC, S4's normal operating temp for coolant is ~97C so I would say you are doing just fine.

The principle behind the oil cooler is the same as a radiator or an intercooler. Most of us do not need an oil cooler unless one is tracking the car, but if you are seeing a high oil temp under normal condition or spirited driving that's related to your location, it is a good idea to add an oil cooler as well. This is what's happening with the BMW 3.0 BiTurbo cars, their oil temperture gets dangerously high under just spirited driving if they didn't opted for the sports package which includes an oil cooler.

Do a search on this subject as there are plenty of threads about oil coolers. Here are some of them:

I don't believe so as they are too small and I imagine not cost effective to have a fan unit build in to it. Or I suppose you can add a special valve to bypass it when you want to, but I don't think it is worth the effort.

Redline water wetter is a good cheap place to start cooling down the car.

Or move to Alaska. That should keep it cool.

Re: Summer is comming.. How do we cool down our Engine??

For the average person and their "close to stock" modifications (would maybe consider K04s in that category.. I am not talking about seriously modified (engine work, huge turbos, etc) to their car simply changing the coolant, upgrading the fan (which will help the radiator work better resulting in lower temps) - Vast offers an upgraded fan http://vastperformance.com/shop/prod...products_id=52, also adding water and meth injection will help drastically lower intake temps which will translate into lower operating tempratures as well. Also upgrading the fan switch so it comes on more often at lower speeds will also help lower temps as well. Oil coolers work well but unless you exceeding power out put alot the stock one should suffice for awhile and might be considered wasted money to some.

OP - Since you already have an RS4 doing the regular maintenance will help but you might benefit most from an upgraded fan, and water and meth injection.. Only issue I see running huge FMIC's that block the cars radiator is over heating at lower speeds where air flow cant get past the intercooler to the radiator which causes over heating on hot days.. (all too common for those in the South East)

Hope that helped and I am sure more experienced people will chime in an offer their advice.

    Cheers

Can water/meth kit be used as a temporary alternative to upgraded intercoolers for the summer?

It can be used to lower intake temps just like an intercooler can but it should never be used as a replacement for smic's or fmic's. Alot of people use water and meth injection to lower temps while they piece together kits and havent yet bought new ic's.

Contact Scott @ US Rally Team for some great Snow Performance water/meth injection setups. Great prices and customer service is impeccable.

should we also do normal cool down like we would in the winter time(let the car sit for 2-3 mins after driving) or no boost for 5mins before parking the car.

Cool down defiantly helps prevent turbo failure especially with the K03s that have problematic oil feed and return lines on early S4 models. It should always be done to help maintain a nice and healthy turbo charged vehicle.

But it doesnt help "cool" the engine down like the OP had asked earlier.

    Cheers
