    Wheel torque specs?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm running stock 5-spoke alloys and am wondering what the torque specs are? I read that the Avus wheels are torqued to 85 ft lbs, but am looking for wheel specific spec. A mechanic at a car dealership I once worked at said he uses 80 ft lbs across the board, but call me OCD... I want the actual spec to work off of.

    Cheers!

    Re: Wheel torque specs?

when i was in highschool auto class, we'd torque them down to 95 ft-lbs.
nobody's wheels ever fell off ;)

    Re: Wheel torque specs?

Post this in the wheel/tire section, should get a response much faster...

95 ft/lbs could relate more to steel wheels... Over-torquing alloys can lead to lug bolt stretching and scoring of the wheels/lug nuts.

    Re: Wheel torque specs?

Well I'll go with the 85 ft lbs. from the Avus wheels until further notice. When I pow-wow with my mechanic I'll ask (if I remember) and post the result.

Does nobody have a Bentley manual handy to flip though the index and find the spec?

OEM torque spec from Audi is 90 ft/lbs make sure you use anti-sieze.

    Nice, thanks.

What kind of dope are we talking about here, nickel-based or a SWAK type product?

Will nickel grade have an adverse affect?

    Re: Wheel torque specs?

One crucial aspect of torquing fasteners, is that the torque wrench used must be accurate within the claimed tolerance percentage of full scale, at the torque value required. Many torque wrenches, require periodic recalibration. And even then, the accuracy is specified over a certain scale range, typically +/- ~4 %, @ =/> 25 % Full scale value. Accuracy below this setting is undefined. Therefore, avoid using a torque tool setting > ~90 percent and particularly < 25 percent end of the full scale range, or the actual torque value acheived is unknown more or less.
Further, torque values are valid only for CLEAN, oiled threads, both the bolt and the hole must be clean and lightly lubricated. Otherwise the tension/clamp forces developed in the shank of the fastener, and the reaction forces in the bolted parts, will not reach the value required to function as designed. If dirty, clean the threads with a method that will not remove metal or distort the threads. For holes, the correct tap to "chase" the threads is prefered. For bolts, a threading die is the best way to clean the threads.
