    Torque Converter Rplacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

So my check engine light came on, so i stopped by my audi mechanic and had him run some diagnostic and Vag-Com and my Torque converter has come to the end of its life and i need to replace it.

So my question is has anyone had to replace this and how much did it cost? I was quoted $900 for the part and $990 for the labor, alot cheaper then the dealer. Total is somewhere between $1800 and $1900 which is quite a bit but i know this stuff costs alot of money. Basically wanna hear some other feedbacks on this problem. i have a 3.0q Tip with 80k.

    Re: Torque Converter Rplacement

IMHO, the B5 B6 automatic transmissions are not that effective. I'm assuming that your A4 is stock. If that's the case an OEM torque converter would be just fine. I replaced my TC because I was increasing the Torque and HP of the engine and didn't want to blow the transmission out. I spent a total of $1600 for an "upgraded" TC. I am on the west coast and the shop I went through was on the east coast. The $1600 included shipping, installation and the actual upgraded product. $1900 seems kind of high. I would suggest multiple quotes, and any extended warranty coverages.

    Re: Torque Converter Rplacement

$900 for parts sounds reasonable, but $1000 on labor is steep. Changing a TC is probably a 6-hour job, so you should be looking at $600.

Upgrade your TC. Our stock TC is weak. I read somewhere on here that our TC has a torque rating of 230 lbs ft, which is 9 lbs ft more than a stock 3.0.

I agree to the cost of parts, but labor is whats kinda choking me and holding me back from doing it. well the guy at the shop is a really honest and a good guy i have been referred to him by several other local Audi owners and he has done some other work on my car before and i was happy. but $1000 for labor is whats killing me, he said its 2 full days of work like 11 hrs or something. Well for now im just gonna drive it for maybe a week or 2 and try to save a little bit of money!

    Re: Torque Converter Rplacement

how could u get price quote for just $1600 for TC replacement!!
    thatz amazing price!!!

I got my TC replaced 6 monthes ago.

My car is 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro B6. I went everywhere for price quote.

    EVERYWHERE asked for $3000+ CAD.
Everywhere I meant 3 different audi dealerships + OKtires + 3 Specilzing on tramssion shops (Mr.minster transmission etc...) + some independ car repair shops.

Finally I settled with OK Tire ($3300 CAD) cuz I have 3rd company powertrain warranty covering $1500.
I found out wut they did is they took the trans out and send back to Audi for repair, then they put it back.

Failure TC is not good at all, if u dont replace it, sooner or later your trans will lose gear and die. (due to TC can't lock up at 80km/hr above, TC will keep spinning leading the transmission fluid willl over heat)

The manager also did a research, he said Im not the unlucky one to have this problem. Lots of B6 3.0L quattro's TC fail, especially 02 03 models.

    Re: Torque Converter Rplacement

Well i guess an $1800 quote isnt so bad from my personal mechanic. my local dealer would do it for like $2200. but $3000 is way too much.

Yea, but at least you won't have to worry about it getting done right. If you want to shop around, try emailing Isaac @ BVA and see what they quote you.

    Re: Torque Converter Rplacement

hey guys i work in a tranny shop, and we charge 90$/hr USD for labor. we would charge 8 hours of labor to do the R&R and rebuild your torque converter. and the rebuilt torque converter would range from $550-$800. bringing the grand total to around 1500-1700$ US. which is a good ass price IMO, compared to audi who wants like atleast $2500 USD.

MAKE SURE THEY FLUSH YOUR TRANNY COOLER OR YOU WILL KILL THE NEW TRANNY/TC WITHIN WEEKS.

Since the OP is located in the US, all the prices I mentioned are American based. In Canada, parts alone are roughly $1300-1500. The shops you went to probably don't do the job themselves, so labor runs unreasonably high.
