    Question buying a b6 3.0; maintence/warranty concerns?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
im very close to purchasing my first audi...
im looking at a pretty interesting combination:
    its a 04' silver USP 3.0 6-speed manual...
ill be buying this car with 39k miles for ~$20k, but heres the catch...
    its on a mitsubishi lot.

im starting in at lawschool on the east coast this fall, and i wont be able to handle any big maintence/repair issues if they arise, financially.
this not being a a turbo car, and a NA v6, what are some major issues or concerns i should be aware of or consider after this amount of mileage...is extended warranty worth getting?

*buying this car used, warranty is my question. mistubishi offers an extended warranty...but how would this work? i havent looked into it, but would that even be an option? can i somehow get an extended thru audi? should i be worried about even getting an extended warranty for this car? thought/ideas on this please...

ill be purchsing it from a bayarea, CA dealership, and driving it cross country with my best friend this summer, and other then that, it will get me around upstate NY...

i feel the 3.0 quattro, with what ill be doing with the car and where ill be located, is a good idea. im not going to mod it all that much. adam and i have a few simple, mellow things we plan to do, but the car, especially performance wise, wont be touched, hence the 3.0 motor being good for me.
i wanted a manual, and love the ultrasport body/goodies, so i think this is a PERFECT cadidate...im just concerned with maintence, warranty, and buying it from a mitsu lot.

thanks for the help, and plan to be around the boards often...

not sure what the point of the mitsu. dealer warranty if you are going to be across the country from where you bought it. If you could get the actual audi warranty than it would probably be worthwhile.

thats what hes asking dude...is that possible?
plus...getting and extended warranty with a dealer, doesnt mean you take it to THAT dealer only does it?

Kev....I would try and get the VIN and contact Audi to see if there is any factory warranty left....Normally, when the factory warranty is running out, the manufacturer will contact you and ask if you want to buy an extended warranty.....The warranty that Mitsu is offering is more than likely a 3rd party warranty that can be used pretty much anywhere....And within that, you will have a few different options on how much you want it to cover.....

As for reliability on the 3.0, the only problem I have had ***knock on wood*** was a small coolant leak which is normal. But then again, my car is still pretty low mileage at under 50K....

Not all 3rd party warranties are created equal. Many of them have VERY restricted policies on where you can take your car, what is covered etc. Read ALL of the fine print.
The OP is going to just have to research the warranty that is being offered and find out if it is worthwhile. Or as mentioned by norcatalyst, contact audi to find out if he can warranty through them.

    To the OP:

Coilpacks may blow, you're going to want to buy extras. They aren't too expensive and take like 5-10 minutes to change out.

Timing Belt/Water-pump: You're gonna want to do these at around 60-70k miles. If you own the car for that long.

People have talked about oil-leaks but they were isolated incidents so I can't really speak about those.

does this seem to be standard for a 3rd party warranty? and does anybody have an idea about how much the audi extended warranty (I believe 100k/6yr) costs?

    thanks for all the feedback.

It does happen. But with less heat from no turbos, it's more rare. Keeping spares in the trunk is still recommended though.

get an Audi extended warranty only, if u get a third party warranty with limited crap ur gonna end up taking it to some place where some dufuses who've never seen an Audi will expirement on ur car, and an extended warranty costs more after every year of ownership and it is 7yrs/100k from the date of purchase by the first owner, when the car had under 10 miles if the car is on its last year ur gonna get 3yrs/100k warranty! 3.0's are pretty reliable, but have it inspected before u go cross country, these things are cash cows so do all preventive measures possible!GL!

What do you guys think about this? His asking price is slightly above 25K, which is a good 5K over the KBB value for Private Party in Excellent condition...he is well firm on his price, as he claims to owe 27K on the vehicle still...he also claims the rarity of the USP w/ low miles as a reason to stay firm on his price as well...

    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/car/639672965.html

    39,xxx miles

    6 speed manual

    Quattro

ULTRASPORT, this is a very rare package, originally added $3000 to the sticker. Includes: lowered/tighter suspension, S4 18” wheels, metallic interior trim, Xenon headlamps, S4 body work

BOSE, 6 CD changer, XM Sat with subscription paid thru 5/16/2008
They now have an Ipod adapter avail for about $150 that you could add at the dealer

    Power driver seat

Heated front seats (they get really hot!)

CERTIFIED this means maintenance included. 6 year, 100,000 mile warranty good until April 2010. The Certified warranty covers everything (fully transferable).

Conti sport tires, less than two years old, 17,000 miles on them

    Had her “Chipped”, this means:
Increased fuel economy: road trips I’ll see approx 33 MPG, mixed driving I’ll see approx 28 MPG. Seriously, that’s better than most of the Hybrids out there now…
Increased horsepower, faster 0-60 (right @ 6 seconds).

haha he will never get that much for that...it's a 1.8t and stock except for the chip. its obviously not worth that much,

i would go with the 3.0...i love mine. i have a 2002 3.0 6 sp. quattro and i have had no problems with it! The fan in the front was set on high so i had to get the control module replaced but that was easy. other than that nothing.

    good luck with your decision

thanks dude! actually, the 3.0 was bought, which is a bummer but not the biggest deal in the world...

i definitely agree about dude not getting what he is asking...way too high...he acts like KBB doesn't apply to USP's, even though the price I'm quoting included USP. he just owes a ton of cash and is too stubborn to see that he's not going to get what he's asking for...at least not from the minimally informed buyer.

Could somebody explain real quick exactly what an Audi Certified Pre-Owned vehicle is? Is the 6yr/100k extended warranty a part of this? How comprehensive is the warranty? What exactly does it cover...?

    Re: buying a b6 3.0; maintence/warranty concerns?

Definitely sounds high... To give you a comparison, I bought mine at the beginning of march 08:

17k miles, 3.0 USP MT6 with zero blemishes anywhere, brand new brakes/fluid, new tires, fuel filter, blah blah..., and every option exc nav, rear sunshade, and rear heated seats. It's a CPO car under warantee till 2010/100k. I paid pretty much top $ for it at 25k from an audi dealer... So I wouldn't think of paying more then that for anything less...

The other cars I looked at were all 1.8s, and all in the low 20k range. A week or two after I bought mine, I saw 6 or 7 more for sale in the socal area. Just be patient and the right deal will present itself to you.

can't go above 20k, and the CPO warranty is a must...so that's pretty much what i'm working with...thanks for all the input and advice dude...can't wait till this summer for us all to get together!

Just be patient and the right deal will present itself to you.
thanks dude! there is definitely no reason for me to be impatient with this...i definitely have a bit of time to work with here, so I have no plan on settling for anything less than what i'm looking for.

39K is pretty low for the 3.0. don't buy the warranty at Mitsubichi, buy the extended warranty from Audi! read carefully on what it covers though, does it cover suspension components and stuff.
3.0 is reliable as long as you take care of it, be prepared to pay more each time you take your car into a shop for oil change, tune up, timing belt and such.

It's rare but it does happen; it happened to me a couple of years ago. I did buy extras but haven't had to use them yet. Knock the wood. Also, find out the 3rd party warranty company and have the local dealer call them to see if they will send them their policy. If your service advisor is super nice he will go over it with you. super super nice :).

I just can recommend the 3.0. Got it about 2 month ago and still love it. I love the manual and the color with the tinted windows.
Fiend of ine is a Audi mechanic in Germany and recommended the 3.0 over the S$ 2.7T what was my alternative. Good luck.
Are you planning on tranfering the car to Paris one day???
