    3.0 rear brakes

In my research I found that the 3.0 rear disc are 255mm and the 1.8T rear are 245mm. Its only 10mm difference. Does anyone know if it is possible(clearance) to run the 3.0 rear disc with the 1.8T caliper and carrier?

    Thanks in advance!

I am going to go with no. Brakes are you usually designed with minimal room in any direction. Plus whats the point in putting on bigger rotors if you are still grabbing them at the same distance from the hub? The reason you want the correct carriers and such is so that it moves the caliper further from the hub. The further from the hub you get the better your stopping power as the same amount of power from a longer moment arm creates and stronger force.

You have to have the 3.0 carrier for the 255mm rotor. ECS sells them. Although when I ordered they sent me carriers for a B5 S4 instead. How nice of them.
But after I got it all worked out, I run the 255mm now, and now reap in the benefits of an incredible 10mm difference in braking, lol.
Seriously, though. People say it isn't worth it for 10mm. But my theory is that if it wasn't worth it, then they wouldn't have put it on the heavier 3.0 and latest model 1.8t's.
Could I tell? Who knows. I put on Stoptechs on the front at the same time..... so who knows what the backs did.

I really want to run B5 S4 rear brakes, but apparently the rotors wont fit over our hub. I am still interested in the B5 A4 upgrade with the A8 rear rotors and carrier with B5 S4 calipers. Its going from 9.6 solid(stock 1.8T) rotor to 10.6 vented(stock A8) rotor. Thats an entire inch bigger plus vented! I really want to know if it works. I dont really see any reason why it wouldnt.

I personaly don't want to overbias the brakes towards the rear. The ONLY brakes I'd run that much larger rears on would be something like Alcons, where the set up is intended for that kind of use.
Otherwise, mixing and matching to me doesn't make sense.
Most of the braking is done up front anyhow as I'm sure we're all aware of. And few of us push the car to its track limit to really need anything like that in the rear.
Most won't admit it, but are doing it for aesthetics.

I agree that I would not only upgrade the rears, but in my opinion, the folks that are 'doing it for aesthetics' are the ones that do fronts only. Proper braking (and brake balance) is as crucial to a good handling car as good shock/spring/coilover....

mix and match is great as long as you get the setup you want/need. The easiest brake upgrade is front/rear 3.0
you need rotors, and carriers... and fresh pads if you are due. that is all.
Not (insert favorite brake setup here) but a significant difference from stock 1.8
