so...what goes wrong in the b6/b7 platform?

just lost my s4 to severe motor damage. looking to get into something with less heartache...the b5 is not without its problems... k03s, 1-2nd gear synchro, tb tear with too much boost...the list goes on. what are some notorious problems with the b6/7 platform? besides being nearly completely unmoddable..

The B6 and B7's are pretty solid cars. No real problems have surfaced since the release of the 2004 S4's. If you want something fast buy an RS4, do a full exhaust, K&N and a Custom Chip Tuning and you should be right with a Stage 3+ S4.

lol there is no way an rs4 could be on par with a stage 3+ s4.

When I had a just a chip and catback I could pull on an rs4 with a full exhaust and tune.

Re: so...what goes wrong in the b6/b7 platform?

I was in you boat a year and a half ago, wanted to have less issues that with my Stage 3- b5. Here is what you do, decide what color you want, find a b6/b7 s4 said color, make sure it has around 25-30K miles, buy it CPO. Next step mods: K&N filter, wheels, Cat-back exhaust, Suspension, and last nav and brakes if you want. People are going to tell you to buy Chip and downpipes and SSK, I don't care who tells you it's okay AOA will void your warranty if you has a catastrophic failure. You are kind of lucky because the only place that will actually guarantee your warranty for the mods they install is Champion here in south florida, they actually pay for the repair if AOA says No. All other will leave you stuck with the bill no matter what the tell you, if some says that those mods will not affect your warranty, have them put it in writing, I bet they will not. I just came home from A dyno day with 5 V8 S4's and 1 S5 and the results will show that it really depends on the car u get the chips and Dp's did not have a great effect.

    Good luck on your search.

no timing belt? i was well aware theres no tuning in this car. i was thinking more along the lines of tasteful weight reduction and handling performance for road racing.

I was made at myself when I realized how much I spent and that it would never really end with that car.

He means it's a chain, but there is a "tb replacement" in the manual at I believe 75k miles.

auditude, your throwing ideas out there like the guy is made of money. he asked for advice on the b6/b7 S4's, not rs4's with custom tunes or s5's.

anyway, these cars have a stout "core". when i mean "core" i mean engine/drivetrain which has been typical of any high performance audi throughout the years. your gonna get your typical BS problems but rarely anything catastrophic. just make sure you buy CPO'd

jack daniels in upper saddle river does warranty after market work via stasis and miltek and such. ask for rich levy. i had the b6 s4 and loved the car for the fact that i couldnt over mod it and blow it up lol... but na its a GREAT solid car and even tho B18b1ex is right about the voided warranty with dp's and a chip, they make the car run great and open it up nicely in my opinion

Re: so...what goes wrong in the b6/b7 platform?

The 4.2l V8 has no timing belt. It has four timing chains that will last the lifetime of the car. One chain drive the idler sprockets for the cams. One chain runs from each idler to the cam (thats 2 total.) The last chain is an accessory drive chain that runs the oil pump and the drive pulley for the accessories (a/c, alt., etc.)

The belt that needs to be changed at 75k is the ribbed v-belt that runs the accessories. Studying the Bentley manual it appears that the front bumper assembly has to come off to accomplish this task.
