    Timing Belt Questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I've had my 2001.5 S4 for about 4 months now. Its at about 58k miles. The timing belt hasn't been done yet.

So I'm just curious. I just spent 1200 on the car the other day including chip+ some maintenance stuff and I'll be tossing 220 down for some dv's. Can I wait on the timing belt? or is it imperative that it is done very soon!? I saw an s4 at the shop that snapped a timing belt and destroyed the motor... now I'm all nervous

Also, how much does it typically cost from a shop, +labor do get it done?

    Re: Timing Belt Questions

I think through a dealer it's in the $1100-1500 range. It probably would've been a wiser choice to do maintenance prior to modding the car, however, if you're that worried about it breaking.

Dealer recommended TB service for 2.7/2.8 motors is 105k, I'm doing mine no later than 85k to be safe (as recommended by the Audi tech who works on modded audis), but probably sooner, seeing as I'm only at 61k right now.

I did my 1st tb job at 100,000 miles. None of the parts I replaced felt any different than the new ones, honestly.

    Re: Timing Belt Questions

I did mine at 80k and my tb looked good. Do it yourself. The Audi dealership here charges $150 and its a 8 hour job. The money saved on labor can be used for more performance parts :)

    Re: Timing Belt Questions

either do it or wait for it to break and spend 3k for heads. ive seen people get away with 100k plus and some break at 60. i do mine and sell them at 60k. 1200 is cheaper than a a pair of heads. i did mine on my s4 at 65k, 122k and would hav done it at 175 again if i didnt sell it
    i heart my s4

    Re: Timing Belt Questions

Doing the timing belt is VERY important. We recommend they be done between 60 and 75k miles for piece of mind. If your belt fails you'll have massive and catastrophic engine failure.

Our 2.7T timing belt kit includes everything you need for the belt service.

yes it was Nogaro blue, stage 3, with milltek exhaust... and other goodies

I need to get a hold of the dude if he's parting out!

In regards to the timing belt, I'd rather have a shop do it. I'm no super grease monkey but I know what it takes just getting to the damn thing. (Not the way it took like an hour to change out the one on my 2jz) I'd be much more comfortable letting a shop do it.

Your a little late to the slaughter, but who knows you might get lucky.

    Re: Timing Belt Questions

just did mine at 91k and everything was in great shape. as for cost, the book time is 5.5 hours so figure the labor rate off that and if you're replacing the belt, tensioners, waterpump, and pullies figure about 600 in parts through a shop(i did it at cost through my shop and i had just under 400 in parts alone)

    Re: Timing Belt Questions

I'm at 74,600 and am looking to have mine done this year. My TB is almost 8 years old and that is the main reason I am doing it, not because of the mileage. I have been chipped for almost 10k miles but msot of it has had the chip in stock mode. Only recently have I been leaving it in performance mode. I am going to have my plugs done at the same time too.
